What would be the best way to catch someone’s attention. I thought for the rest of that day. It than just hit me. I should write an argumentative essay. This information may change your perspective on kids starting school time.
Have you ever felt like you are not taking in as much as you could from your first few classes well if you have you are right. Your brain is not actually taking in information until 8:30AM that is because you should not be waking up until 8:00 AM. The reason for this is your mental clock. A mental clock is how your brain decides when you should be sleeping and when you should be getting up in the morning.
Overall by moving the start of school, there are many problems that can be resolved. A solution we hear all the time to the lack of sleep is “Teens who need more sleep should go to bed earlier” but for teens this isn’t exactly possible. Everyone has an internal system that causes us to feel sleepy and awake at certain times, this is called the circadian rhythm which changes at certain
This prevents adolescents from dropping off until 11 p.m.,” (Kalish), with a different sleeping schedule caused by the hormone melatonin, which causes tiredness, it would be beneficial to start school an hour later. If most high school students don’t fall asleep until 11 p.m. and get up at 6:30 a.m., then most students will only get seven and a half hours of sleep, or less if they have to get up earlier because they live further away and have a longer commute. Studies show that after nine hours of sleep adolescents
Many people argue whether school start times should stay the same or become later in the day. Most students already don't get enough sleep during the night and that can affect their learning experience in school (Wahlstrom). However some positive effects can still come from waking up early in the morning and getting to school around the same time. Although good can come from waking up early in the morning and sleeping in, students still need later school starting times to improve their overall health.
Why school should start later? School days are not supposed to start before 8:30 a.m. for middle and high schoolers. This fact is supported by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine that links early days to car accidents along the roads, depression among the young teenagers and increase in poor performance academically due to early school days. Teens struggle through the challenge of waking up very early in the morning so that they can be at school at the right time.
The clock strikes 12:00 am and students are trying to finish their pile of homework due in the morning. Students are rushing to finish in order to get ready for the next day. Schools are assigning students a lot of homework, but the homework can do more harm than good. Negatively affect kids by sleep deprivation. Source of frustration and daily stress.
School starting times has been an ongoing debate with no end in sight. Due to early mornings, adolescents have been found to sleep less, and with a hefty majority of young people not getting the necessary amount of sleep, there are many damaging side effects. I believe that the school start time should be pushed back because learning capabilities can be compromised, the body does not respond well on limited sleep, and danger on the road is greatly increased. Many studies have been piloted that demonstrate the benefits of delaying school starting times.
To complete the matter further, the excision of Fridays from the school schedule would also cause teenagers to lose precious hours of sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation, teenagers require around 8 to 10 hours of sleep in order to function at full capacity; otherwise, they will not be productive in school (National Sleep Foundation n.d.). How can overscheduled teenagers attend sports practice or club meetings, finish all of their homework, and perform any family or job obligations in such a short period of time? Assuming a student arrives home from school and immediately begins to accomplish his list of tasks, he would have only three hours to do so if he were aiming to obtain the recommended levels of sleep. This arrangement is not reasonable.
Later start times in schools allow students to get more sleep, making them more healthy, productive, and awake. First, sleep is a necessity due to the repairs the body undergoes, so lack of sleep can lead to complications healthwise. According to the Gale Encyclopedia of Public Health, “Teenagers require an average of 9.25 hours of sleep per night for brain development, health, and optimal performance” (Alic and Nienstedt 862-867). As mentioned previously, only one out of ten students get an adequate amount of sleep (Troxel). So, those who are not a part of this category run the risk of developing health problems, because they are not allocating enough time for brain development, which occurs during sleep.
Most kids are absent or late usually because they sleep in. School starting later can improve a student’s attendance. In the first place, students will have a lower chance of sleeping in. One reason why is because a student usually sleeps for up to 9 and a half hours, and has a curfew at about 9 or 10. Most kids wake up at around 6:00 a.m, because most schools start at about 7:30 a.m,which does not give a child the amount of sleep he
Rising at the crack of dawn also causes too many students to fall asleep in school because of their lack of sleep. Although early start times give all people more time after school, they are causing those people to be underprepared. Because of the lack of sleep, teenagers are getting more and more sleep deprived. What they do not know is
If the schools started later in the day absences would drop. Students being late is a big problem in their grades. Kids wake up early in the morning because sometimes their schools start early. When they wake up early in the morning their body still says that it is time to sleep. If we have classes that are later than kids will attend school more and get more sleep.
When it starts later in the day it will save up to $40 million per year. Kids can get a lot more sleep at night. Absences can drop 15% because many kids get more sleep. Kids will not fall asleep in class because they got more sleep. Kids can not get distracted, and kids won’t have to wake up early in the morning.
Schools should start later because students need their sleep. Researchers, studies, and sleep scientists show that schools that are starting early are affecting the lives of students. Students are too tired to get up in the morning and some some sleep in class do to lack of sleep. Teens that drive to school get into accidents due to barely any sleep at night. Students should have to go to school later because then there wouldn’t be as much of a problem.
