Forty-three years ago, a federal law was passed to eliminate gender inequality among schools. Title IX, among the Education Amendments of 1972, became the first federal law to prohibit sex discrimination in schools and education. The law covers both women and men, who are involved in any educational institution or program that has received or is currently receiving federal funds. Before Title IX was passed, women and young girls were usually excluded from any athletic opportunity that they had. Since the law was passed, women and girls have increased opportunities to participate and the rate has increased exponentially. Greater numbers of participation are shown in more elite competitions including the Olympics, World Championships, and Professional leagues, and stunning achievements have been made. There are more opportunities to compete at elite levels through competitions like the Olympics, World Championships and professional leagues. Some argue that furthering options for female athletics would starve already successful men’s programs. This is, unfortunately, true to some extent. George F. Will writes in his article “A Train Wreck Called Title Ix” on the Newsweek website that colleges terminated over 400 men 's athletic teams to produce precise proportionality between the genders enrollments and participation in athletics. Although growing women’s athletics did cause some shortage in funding for men it is illogical to deny rights to one people group for the sake of having excess in another group. I also do not agree that it would be fair men's sports had to help funds women's sports or vice versa. I think Title IX has good intentions in such the attempt to stop discrimination and sex segregation, but I feel that individuals' whom have power over applications, still have the ability to deny applications and write off a different reason for denial. Overall, Title IX has it's pros and cons. I believe this policy would be great if applied appropriately and if it did not have holes in the system.
The policies of Title IX is a problem that has been an issue pushed under the rug for years and it needs to be revised. Men’s teams shouldn’t have to be cut, all it takes is changes within the universities and a public voice. Spreading the word about Title IX and the negative effects will open the eyes of politicians, courts, and the universities. If everyone started a trend on social media and put pressure on the colleges, they could make a plan to reverse the negative effects. Challenging and changing the impurities of Title IX won’t make genders’ in athletics unequal, but balanced and ultimately just.
In addition, the opponents of Title IX might also agree that football should be withdrawn from the Title IX’s list as women do not play football. Nevertheless, before making the statements that a sport should be eliminated in the Title IX equation due the lack of one gender’s participation, one should consider other sports where there are only a small number of men compared to the women participants. Particularly in volleyballs and field hockey, they are males and females player. However in this case, men participants are outnumbered by the females athletes (Zimmerman). So, should volleyball and hockey be removed from Title IX privileges too?
Title nine requires athletic programs to be equivalent to enrollment. The number of sports programs for each sex should reflect the ratio of students enrolled in the school. With more women attending college the need for more sports programs has grown dramatically. Some aspects of Title IX will tell you which side you will decide on. Even though I think Title IX is fair to men and women some may disagree with me. They might say that since Title IX seems to be paying more attention to girls they tend to cut out equal rights for men such as playing sports.

In certain cases, a woman loses out on a job in the sports industry because she is exactly a woman. A male trainer can refuse to train women because of the parts her body has. Men and women have grown up in a world with the mindset that women know less than men when it comes to sports.

If society stops to understand the struggles these women have been facing for decades will have a clearer picture of what steps to take in order to make a change in the sports industry. Men need to put their masculinity aside and advocate giving women a voice. The purpose of this paper is to explore the issues women in the sport world have faced through history, wage gaps, current issues today, and to discuss findings and recommendations for future research. “Female discrimination in sports is a common occurrence all around the world, women are seen as less than males.” (Ladrea) Equality in sports is unequal. In the 1800 women got very little attention and did not get the opportunity to play in any sport in America and all around the world. Men could go and try out for different sports teams and workout but for women they were only allowed to stay home to cook and clean. There were some events women could participate in but it could not be competitive, it was focused on getting active and staying active.
