During 1900 and 1960 were there blacks who got tired being mistreated,unequal opportunities and wanted to leave lynching and Jim crow laws. So they migrated to cities in the Northeast like Newark for an example. Between 1950 did the population grow from 70,000 to 220.000 in Newark (according to Pbs.org). But what they arrived to were not really what they were expecting. Here in Newark were they segregated, had blue collar jobs, poor housing conditions and the unemployment rate were high. So the there wasn't really a big difference from what they left. He was arrested for tailgating and driving the wrong way on a one way street. He was supposedly have been beaten and dragged into the 4th precinct according to witnesses who lived across the incident (according to Blackpast.org). Mr Smith stated during his hearing “they caved in my ribs, put a hole in my head and busted my hernia”, he also added that when he arrived in the police station that 6 people started stomping him (according to blackpast.org). After the incident was CORE, a civil rights activist group called and explained to about the incident, so they decided to visit John Smith. When they saw him and saw his condition they demanded that he would be transferred to a hospital, their demand was later granted. During this time started the buzzing about John Smith go around so people decided to create a “peaceful demonstration” that did not hold for too long. The piece was ruined as people started throwing rocks and molotovs toward the precinct, this led to that people started plundering and ruin stores. After a while of this unpeaceful breakout were police officers allowed to use weapon and that's when the riot got a lot worse.
