English is the mother tongue of 300 million people in the world. The countries where English is the native or first language are the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Canada, Australia, New Zealand and South Africa. Some other countries like India, Pakistan, Africa, France, and the Soviet Union, etc. use English as a second or foreign language. Thus English is spoken by 700 million people in the world, which is next only to the Chinese language.
It follows the Latin language of the Italic branch. French is the most widespread language worldwide after the English language. The number of the native speakers is around 73.8 million. Furthermore, about 338 million people are able to speak and understand it from all over world. French is the official language in 29 countries, mostly from La Francophonie which is a community of French-speaking countries.
This is why so many colonies that were British before now have English as the national language, with many of their people speaking English as a first language. Another reason for the spread of English is economics. By being the global political and military superpower, Britain and USA also became the leading trading nations and many countries and territories needed to learn English in order to trade with them. The USA is currently a major trading partner with almost every other country of the consumer economy. This explains why in many countries, English is a compulsory subject in all levels at school.

It makes news daily in many countries and is adopted by many countries. It has a special role to play in the countries where it has been accepted as the official language and is being used as a medium of communication. It has reached the present day status primarily because of two main factors – the expansion of British Empire in the 19th Century and the emergence of the United States as the leading economic power of the 20th Century.
It is spoken as a first language in many countries and as an international language all around the world. Nowadays, the importance of English language cannot be denied since it is the most commonly used language. It is used as an international language throughout the world and more than three-hundred-forty million people use it as a mother tongue in United Kingdom and the United States. The importance of this language comes as a result of its international use. The world we live in today connects through electronic media and it is necessary to have knowledge on this language as it is the main medium of communication.
