WOMEN EMPOWERMENT IN EDUCATION
Ashwini Biradar and Devika A are the members of Group Five and they have taken ‘Women Empowerment in Education’ as their topic for CIA 1.
Before going deep into the topic, first of all one should know what Empowerment means. “Empowerment means moving from a weak position to execute power”. By the term ‘Women empowerment’, they try to tell the viewers that women are moved from their suppressed state to execute power and come up in life. And for that, they need education. Education is an essential means of empowering women with the knowledge, skills and self-confidence necessary to fully participate in the development process.
Women constitute almost half of the population in the world. But the hegemonic masculine ideology made them suffer a lot as they were denied equal opportunities in different parts of the world. Due to the rise of Feminist idea, there has been a tremendous improvement in women’s status in the World. Women’s education in India has been a major concern of both the government and civil society as educated women can play a very important role in the development in the society. Women power is crucial to the economic growth of any country. In India, this is yet to meet the requirements despite reforms. Jawaharlal Nehru said, “If you educate a man you educate an individual, however, if you educate a woman you educate a whole family. Women empowered means mother India empowered”. Educating women allows everyone to see different perspectives which help us progress into a more understanding society. Through education, women can have more opportunities for jobs and a better life. The Universal Declaration of Human Rights (Article 1) states, “All human beings are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and should act towards one another in a spirit of brotherhood,” which means even women are equal. However, the problem is not many people are helping.
A case study done in India to analyze and discuss solutions for a lack in women's participation in India showed that many women do not pursue an education due to the negative cultural and social attitudes that surround educated women. It also attributes this to gender stereotyping within the classroom which discourages women from continuing with education in order to avoid the unequal treatment they receive. Society's emphasis on an early marriage also plays a major role in this as they do not want to stray from the cultural norm of marriage without an education (Singh 2018). This journal article simply emphasizes the culture’s distaste for women in education and how societal expectations make it a challenge for women to get an education. Another study was done in India that looked at the causes of gender inequality within the country attributes this mentality of the superiority of men stems directly from the lack of education amongst women.
“You educate a man; you educate a man. You educate a woman; you educate a generation.” Bringham Young (GoodReads, 2015) Women have a tendency of starting a new view or a new idea. It is from women’s beliefs and values that changing times have come for more values and more beliefs.
Where are the women? This is the question that Cynthia Enloe urges everyone to ponder when analyzing any field, problem, or project. Enloe's latest lecture discussed if ISIS is a development issue, which creates two sub-questions, one: where are the women in ISIS? and two: Where are the women in development? While there are other questions to examine in relation to ISIS, I believe her overarching argument during this lecture was to question how ISIS as it grows into a larger more stable 'state' affects the lives and development of women and their societies.
The right of women’s education wasn’t meant for their own benefit but to place them in a position to form future generations into good citizens and
If women aren 't educated, they won 't get respectable jobs, and would hold jobs that are seen as "traditional" and a "women 's job," like cleaning. A present-today advocate for women 's education is Malala Yousufzai. She got shot in the head by the Taliban because she advocated for women 's rights to education. It 's both refreshing to know that we have strong female advocates that are fighting for the rights of millions of women, but also disturbing that we are still fighting for those same rights over 200 years apart. Another important thing to note is the perspective of the advocate.
Educating women was the primary focus for many modern feminists, explaining that if women were educated the opportunities
CHAPLIN TO CHURCHILL INTRODUCTION There was a time when women used to face many problems while living in the society. However, this trend has been changed but women have to follow various tactics in order to maintain harmony in the society and to stay at par with men. It took a lot for them to resolve the struggles of equal rights and to implement the same in real world without giving rise to any controversy. A few years ago women were never seen in influential roles due to many discriminatory factors but now the whole era has been changed and many women can be seen performing really well even better than men. This only has become possible due to the hardships faced by women in old times and how they fought for their rights
The position of women in society hasd also been shaped by reforms. Women had not wanted to be limited to being only wifes and mothers, but they had begun to express their wishes. The most important request of them was equality between women and men. The most important desire of leading men and women of this period was that women and men had same educational rights and they had called spade a spade desires like dissemination of education, compulsory and free primary education, and provision of educational unity. Firstly, women rights had not enough support but the support to them had increased due to rising communication with West.
The Progressive Era of the early 1900s was a period of economic growth in the United States. Millions flocked to the cities like New York in pursuit of wealth, freedom, and a chance at making a better life for themselves and their families. As a prime focus during the Progressive Era, women challenged social and political barriers, which led to their empowerment and a new female political agenda. Women began to become more prominent in the workplace and by 1920, nearly 25 percent of employed women had office jobs or worked as a telephone operator (Eric Foner, Give Me Liberty! An American History Volume 2, 700).
According to ASHE Higher Education Reports, since 1988 more than half of all undergraduate students have been female. It proves that education has finally taken a front seat since the 1700’s. Not only do women have this amazing interest in education, but they are now leaders in corporate America and around the world. Educated women are using their intelligence to push other women to follow their steps just by being themselves. Women like Michelle Obama and Hillary Clinton just to name a few are making tremendous efforts to bring education and the rights of women to the fore front.
This research would utilize education of women as the bedrock to women empowerment. The researcher would not delve into economic empowerment of the woman, but restrict this work to empowering a woman in such a way that she would be able to make certain decisions that affect her life and that of her family. 1.7 RESEARCH
