Kids can call the authorities if they see something that shouldn’t be happening. Just like the situation which happened at Sandy Hook Elementary. They could also call an ambulance if someone got cut and was bleeding. Whitney Young Principal Dr. Joyce D. Kenner said "I think (a cellphone) could be an educational tool and it could be a safety tool” (Rossi 8). Parents could also contact their kids to update them if there was a change of plans. Bill Di Blasio, mayor of New York City, answered when asked about the prohibition of cell phones, “the prohibition was out of touch with the realities of modern child-rearing, and parents have a right to reach their children by phone” (Brody and Sharp A13). An example of parents updating their kids is when my friends mom came to pick him up. The original plan was to walk home, but throughout the day the temperature dropped. By the end of school the weather was frigid. His mom texted him in class, and he didn’t have to walk home in the cold. If allowing students to have phones in class can make schools safer, we should do
The Sandy Hook Elementary school shooting was one that shocked the nation and opened the eyes of Americans everywhere. This horrible event opened up our eyes to the fact that someone could easily come into a school and raise havoc with ease. This man, Adam Lanza, had no affiliation with Sandy Hook or any one inside it but still decided to take the lives of 20 children and 6 adults before taking his own. In the statements made by Joe Scarborough from his show “Morning Joe”, he says “Every American must know from this day forward that nothing can be the same again.” This is a very powerful statement because it brings up an important point.
I had never seen anything like this before. I was 12 and never thought that a shooting could happen in a school environment. Sadly, 12 year olds today probably would not be as shocked as I was when I saw the images on CNN and frantically called my parents. Watching the coverage of this massacre all day, I was completely appalled that the shooter was mental ill and on a wait list for a mental hospital. The thought that there was a large wait for mental ill patients to get help was
The morning of December 14, 2012 would not be a typical one of the inhabitants of Newtown, a small tight-knit town in Fairfield County, Connecticut. At approximately 9:30 AM, shortly after the beginning of the school day, Adam Lanza, a deranged, violent man, armed with a rifle, two hand guns, a shotgun, and a plethora of extra ammunition, forcefully entered Sandy Hook Elementary School and commenced a shooting rampage that would eventually take the lives of twenty innocent first graders, along with six faculty members who heroically sacrificed their lives protecting their students. The rivalry between students who believe they should be able to use their cell phones in class and teachers who believe them to be disrespectful has caused a ripple effect that now bleeds through many classrooms roaring its controversial head. And here we are stuck in an ongoing battle seldom won by students. The position that students should not be able to misuse their cell phones in a classroom setting is one held by the author of “Today 's Lesson: Life in the Classroom Before Cellphones” Louise Katz, who believes that “those halcyon days” were over (Katz). Likewise, Zoya Kahn, the author of “Why Cell Phones Do Not Belong In The Classroom” has a similar stance on the topic, Kahn states that “it is in everyone’s interest for instructors to
What parents nowadays don 't get worried about their child when they are locked in the school with something bad going on around them? If the kids were allowed the use of their phone during school they could text their parents to let them know they are safe. Not only can they use it to text their parents, but teachers or the students can also get ahold of the police, firefighters, etc. However, If a student has her of his ringer on while the threat walks past the room that they are locked up in they it could put them in more danger and there would be a bigger chance of them getting found. In order to stop that from happening the teachers would have to be in charge of making sure all the kids phone’s sound was off when they first hear the bells.
Many things don’t go vigorous or as planned because phones constantly go off during class. Another reason, phones should be prohibited at school is that they are extremely harmful and dangerous. The Environmental Protection Agency says, “... Can be disguised as a gun and used to look up harmful websites.’’ This leads to a
Could Phones in Class Be the Key to Learning Seeing a kid in class with their phone out, your first instinct will be telling them to put it away.
