As an intern at Preferred Family Healthcare, I am working with individuals in the Residential Care Facility (RCF). I am working with these individuals who 's goal it is to move out of a residential setting into their own apartment. One of the groups I have been facilitating is comprised of three men. These men range in age from early twenties to fifties, but all have the same goal of wanting to move out on their own. Preferred Family Healthcare RCF staff meets weekly to discuss and identify the needs and concerns of these individuals.
I examined the man sitting across from me, who was with his family yet his eyes seemed to not understand what was going on. I examined another lady who was with her family, she seemed so energized and happy, At that moment I began to realize how much things I took for granted. As a teenager I have never thought about aging, I’ve thought about having future goals and what not, but I have never thought about myself as an elderly. . Not only that,I realized that the things that have never crossed my mind, have been what most of the residents have been wishing for.
In this elderly interview, I chose to interview a very good friend, who currently lives in Henderson, NV. Ms. D.T is a 70 year old Caucasian female who became widowed three years ago. We met in her two story home, where she lives with her beloved cocker spaniel named Belle. As stated previously D.T is a close friend and I had been to her house on numerous occasions; however, I had not been to her residence since the passing of her husband.
I 've learned while conducting these interviews that both indivuials have similar issues within the healthcare system. one of the biggest issues both interviewees faces was the cost of healthcare and health insurance coverage. One of the interviewees has a chronic illness, and at times has to decide if she wants to purchase her needed medication or to buy groceries for herself and her family. The other interviewee although employed, doesn 't have health insurance coverage because its too costly every month. it seems they 're both appreciative of the fact there is a somewhat healthcare system with health care providers and professionals available to them, but feels its only available if you have health insurance coverage.
Even though the economy is getting better and more people are having jobs, but there are still people who are experiencing financial difficulty, therefore it is harder for them to obtain health care coverage. Because of that, there are many people that have limited access to health care. Health disparity can occur through ethnicity, socioeconomic status, age, location, gender, disability status. Because of these factors, patient care can be greatly affected.
