Arkansas Rehabilitation Services Division is a division of the Arkansas Department of Career Education which helps individuals’ overcome obstacles by focusing on their abilities rather than the disability. Arkansas Rehabilitation Services Division mission is to prepare Arkansans with disabilities to work and lead productive and independent lives. Arkansas Rehabilitation Services (ARS) include career and technical education and training, transition from school to work or postsecondary education, on-the-job training, and ancillary support services that clients may need for successful employment. With 19 offices statewide, including the Arkansas Career Training Institute in Hot Springs, ARS has counselors who serve each of the states’ 75 counties. ARS provides transitioning services for students finishing high school, assists those with special communications needs such as the deaf and hearing impaired and provides specialized assessment and treatments. ARS is funded through a federal and state partnership with federal funding from the Rehabilitation Services Administration of the U. S. Department of Education. I was a little apprehensive about shadowing Edwin, because I wasn’t sure how well we would communicate through an interpreter. I also had no knowledge of the Arkansas Department of Career Education – Arkansas Rehabilitation Services and didn’t know what to expect. I happy to report this was probably one of the best experiences I’ve ever had. It was amazing to watch this person who had a disability himself work with others with similar disabilities. He was engaging, extremely knowledge when discussing his role as a Rehabilitation Counselor and professional.
