For today’s dental hygiene professional, there are many other career pathways to explore as well. More than ever and before has there been more opportunities for professional growth in this industry. How and where you work today is all up to you and how you want to work.
Introduction Dental hygienists are assistants to the dentist because they get everything ready for the dentist and may even do some work before the dentist sees the patient depending on what the patient is there for. A dental hygienist helps assist their patients on how to practice good oral care and teaches them how to prevent dental diseases which are going to the dentist every six months, flossing twice a day, and brushing after every meal. Dental hygienists play an important role when it comes to informing patients about oral care and water fluoridation. Below is a brief description of the dental hygienists occupation and then the background information about water fluoridation.
Not every seventeen year old can tell you what they plan on majoring in without changing their mind but not me. I’ve always been interested in teeth. I plan on studying Dental Hygiene at Northern Arizona University because I want to be exposed to more than one learning environment. When I receive my bachelors in Dental Hygiene I want to stay in Flagstaff for a couple years and eventually go back to school in order to become a dentist but I would rather be practicing dental hygiene than go to dental school for a long period of time.
My top four priorities for work are stability/ reliability, balance, money, and passionate. I would need a stable/ reliable job so I wouldn’t have to worried about losing my job. A deal breaker would be a lack of financial stability because I need to be able to pay my bills and then still have money left over to leisurely spend or for emergencies. Some of the character strengths that I felt accurately described me are gratitude, humor, and curiosity. Humor describes me the most because I like joking around and making others around me laugh.
They will examine a patients mouth for signs of disease or good oral care. They may also take x-rays of teeth and the jaw area, apply sealants and fluorides to protect teeth, and keep track of patient care and treatment assessments. In most cases, they will educate a patient on how to improve and maintain proper oral care such as brushing and flossing correctly. In some states, dental hygienists are allowed to place and carve fillings and periodontal dressings. However, other states will not allow for this.
Many advantages are a bright side to the job. Education and salary are a very defining idea within the dentistry department. Scheduling, environment, work conditions, and opportunities are important for a dental hygienist. You never know how many patients or what kind of patients you will meet within a day’s work.

Dental assistants provide their patients a way to stay healthy within oral activities while also providing general happiness to a patient. Assistants work hand in hand with a dental hygienist observing, supporting, and caring for the patients need, whenever they need them. They work with tools, sit and stand long periods per day, and work in one of the dirtiest places on the human body, the mouth (Summary). I chose questions that would be easy for her to answer and questions that could be incorporated into my essay. When I first came to University of Bridgeport, I first heard about their dental hygiene program from my advisor, who had positive feedback to say about the program. Yet, he told me how competitive it was, because he wanted to make sure this was going to be the right path for me to pursue and that I could handle the pressure. My grades were not the question matter in this case. I set a pretty good standard for myself to follow to keep my place in the deal list, while aiming to advance myself in the presidential list.
