Lastly, my understanding of diversity and your goal for developing it in the research workforce is that diversity enhances social development, self-awareness, and promotes creative thinking. It enhances social development in that by being exposed to people of different cultures and ethnicity, one may want to learn more about a community which can give them insight into how and why things work as they do and possibly a way to change them for the better. Diversity also enhances self-awareness in the same way it enhances social development, because since one is enticed to learn about different cultures which allows them to not view someone who is not like them background but it makes you self aware of the unique difference between human beings.
As stated in the previous chapter connection, there are many challenges that stand in the way of urban education. The main issue discussed in chapter 10 of the book “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education” by Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode, was the issue of bilingual programs never having enough support by schools. In addition “bilingual teachers have been segregated programmatically and physically from other staff members, making both teachers and students feel isolated from the community (p.380)”. Autobiographical Diversity Paper 1. Environment: I grew up in El Dorado, a midsize town in south central Kansas about 30 miles from Wichita. I used to refer to El Dorado as a small town until I came to Kansas State and met many other Kansans who were from towns with 500 or 1,000 people. That made El Dorado, with a population of 13,000, seem pretty big so I call it a midsize town now.
Diversity helps us to understand different perspectives and allows for greater empathy and understanding. This can have positive effects on individuals' education and career prospects, as they can learn from various sources with increased comprehension and sophistication. In addition, diversity inspires creativity which improves learning outcomes across disciplines. All of these things are impacted by international involvement and without it diversity would reduce and so would our understanding. Brave New World, written by Aldous Huxley, shows the starkness of a world where uniformity is paramount and diversity is despised as the root of instability. Diversity is a term that we are familiar with. It describes the differences between individuals and groups in terms of culture, nationality, ability, ethnic origin, gender, age, religion, belies, sexual orientation and social class (Clarke, Mark, Pat etal.,2012).
