Breathing Breathing is another factor in meditating. Breathing is one of the most important functions of our lives, and yet many of us breathe incorrectly. The oxygen we breathe while going about our daily business is critical to our health and the course our health will take. Insufficient oxygen daily will diminish our ability to think clearly, and will only exacerbate our stresses and anxieties, not to mention our well-being. Not everyone knows how to breath properly, breathing with our diaphragms, (our tummy muscles, pay attention to small babies!) rather than with our intercostals (ribs and muscles) which only moves our shoulders and upper chest, is said to be the best way to breath. Diaphragm breathing fills our lungs to capacity, …show more content…
If not, what prevents you from meditating daily? For example, it is your job, family obligations, or something else? Would you like to meditate every day? How often do you meditate? For beginners, how often do you think you could commit to meditating? How long do you normally meditate? Is that long enough? For first timers, how long do you think you would like to meditate to start with (say, 5 to 10 minutes)? Some people use a timer to see where they might feel comfortable donating time to themselves, setting it for, say 2 minutes, then four, and so on. What time of day do you like to meditate? Are you able to meditate during this time of the day consistently? If not, is there a reason why you can or are not able to meditate at the same time of day? If you’re a beginner, what do you think would be the best time of the day for you to meditate and why? Do you have a sacred place where you meditate? What makes it sacred for you? For newbies, do you need to create a sacred space to help you meditate? What would help make it sacred for you? What do you do to get ready to meditate? For example, do you prepare your meditation area with fresh flowers perhaps? For beginners, what do you think would help you to get ready for
I think that a time of silence/meditation is a good idea because it does not imply any specific religion or any religion at all.
Practicing meditation allows me to become aware of my thoughts and the world around me. I can better understand who I am by spending 10 minutes alone and reflecting on my thoughts. I enjoy reflecting on myself because mentally creating the person I want to be and taking action will only translate positively in my life. This form of intelligence will allow me to succeed in my future career. I aspire to become a nurse, and by understanding my own emotions and deeply comprehending my awareness, I can help
A sacred space is defined as a location that has been designated by a group as worthy of devotion or loyalty. A sacred space can be a cemetery, monument, or any type of location that represents a connection to an object of devotion. These sacred spaces link people of the present and future to the past and help them to remember something or someone that deserves their devotion, loyalty, and respect. A sacred space can be represented by a famous battle, building, location where a historical event occurred, or even a famous person who did something for their community. In my hometown of Corpus Christi, Texas one example of a sacred space would be a monument of a famous person who lived in the city, Selena Quintanilla.
Sacred places can be considered sacred for a few reasons. Whether a god inhabits the site, maybe the god created the place, or may just have paid the site a visit. Sacred sites can also gain a spiritual connection from a historic religious person such as Muhammed or Jesus Christ. Birth and death places of saints and prophets are also considered sacred. These sites can also be places where relics are found such as a splinter from the cross or a bone from an apostle.

A sacred space is often distinguished from other spaces by its atmosphere and connection to the transcendent or otherworldly. Many features of the space, such as its architecture, lighting, and décor, create an aesthetic that is conducive to one’s experience of spirituality within the space. While sacred spaces are frequently defined by religious institutions as either temples, shrines, churches, or mosques, they are not necessarily limited to such conventional categories. For example, Native American tribes regarded caves or other natural wonders as sacred; some spaces do not have to fit strict religious molds to be venerated.
Mindfulness meditation has been described ‘as the awareness that comes from paying attention to the present moment experience in a purposeful and non-judgmental manner’ (Bishop et al., 2004 cited in Brown, Bravo, Roos, & Pearson, 2014 p. 1020). Pearson, Brown, Bravo and Witkiewitz (2015) suggest there are five important features of mindfulness when practising such as focussing one’s attention to the present and avoiding distractions, non-judgmentally experiencing thoughts, non-reactivity to thoughts, labelling experiences and simply observing thoughts/feelings. Integrated with the literature, this portfolio will contain description of my experience with mindfulness meditation technique resulted from guided exercises from Rob Nairn’s book ‘Diamond
It is kept away from the profane in order for it to not become immersed in the mundane. The sacred can be manifested in various forms such as stones and trees. But it never emerges as a sacred entity on its own- the form it acquires (such as that of the stone or tree) acquires a sacred value and thus becomes that entity that is to be worshipped. In the first chapter, ‘Sacred Space’, the divide between religious spatial dynamics is delved into.
The heart may have the sinoatrial node (SA node) to trigger contraction, but in order for us to breath our nervous system has to signal for us to begin the process of ventilation (breathing). Our brain stem has three parts to it, but only the pons and medulla oblongata play a key role in breathing. The medulla helps set the respiratory rhythm by receiving and sending impulses to a bundle of neurons called the ventral respiratory group to the phrenic nerve to bring about contraction in the diaphragm and external intercostal muscles. All this only happens though due to the sensors of the chemoreceptors. The chemoreceptors located in the medulla and carotid and aortic bodies detect a rise in carbon dioxide (CO2).
I actually go into this soap shop every single time and I always get some type of lotion that calms me down. After I purchase it I go back out and go get myself Starbucks down the street. After I get my coffee there is a special place that I go and sit. There is a restaurant that’s downhill and when you walk around it there is a waterfall that changes colors. It changes blue, green and purple over
Mindfulness & Power of our thoughts A strong impact is made on our health and overall well-being by what we think and feel, how we talk to ourselves, and what view we take about what is happening to us, and around us. Mindfulness, in its simplest form, means to be able to pay attention to the present moment, without judgment and criticism. To the things that actually “are”.

Over the course of this winter quarter, I have learned in my class of Psychology of Wellness how to incorporate mindfulness into my daily life. The definition of mindfulness is considered an art. In the book of the Fully Present, the authors Susan Smalley and Diana Winston transmitted their wisdom on how to learn, practice and cultivate this art. According to the mentioned authors, they defined mindfulness as “the art of observing your physical, emotional, and mental experiences with deliberate, open, and curious attention” (2010, p.78). This definition shared by the authors is simple, but it communicates what are the characteristics that an individual needs to consider when it comes to being mindful.
