Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).

For the purpose of this week’s discussion, I will choose a case study and explain the likely diagnosis along with the differentials.
My capstone project is about the need for nurses to learn about cultural diversity, cultural awareness and cultural sensitivity. This has been a fascinating project to explore and I am learning about so many cultural beliefs. When a patient's cultural practice is understood competent patient care is rendered and health care disparities are eliminated. For example, in some cultures many people believe that illness and evil can be prevented by following strict religious codes, morals and practices.
There are three primary reasons for choosing to apply to Washburn’s School of Nursing. First, I was looking for a highly accredited nursing school with a strong reputation for learning. Although it was difficult finding a lot of rankings information about Washburn’s School of Nursing, I was able to uncover some information from Best-Nursing-Colleges.com which ranks Washburn’s School of Nursing 78th in the Midwest and in the top three locally. Second, my family and me have many friends who have received degrees or currently obtaining degrees from Washburn University and have very positive things to say about the University, faculty and overall learning experience.
1. For Program Student Learning Outcomes what I demonstrated in my artifact is Develop leadership skills to provide and continuously improve the delivery of safe, patient-centered quality healthcare. Within in nursing we must develop leadership skills to better serve our patient. The reason why nurses should have leadership skills because it will help the nurse to be able to intervene, be able to implement tasks, create care plan, and evaluate. Also, with leadership it helps you to be more efficient in advocating for your patient, which will lead to patient-centered quality care.
The Institute of Medicine (IOM) has a strong stance on nurses and leadership. They believe that nurses are a vital component to health care system and nurses in leadership roles can have a positive impact on such. Nurses are in all sorts of roles within the health care systems ranging from a staff nurse, nurse managers, to advance practice, all the way to congress (Finkelman & Kenner, 2013). In addition, they even serve in the boardroom within some health care organizations. Leadership doesn’t necessarily mean a nurse in a manager position, but a nurse who has an influence on staff.

All the qualities mentioned above are the qualities that make a good and an effective nursing leader. However, from these examples we can see that having leadership qualities does not always refer to those who are managers. It is very easy to get wrapped up in the day to day tasks that we complete as nurses. But in order to give our patients the best possible care, we must look at our day through a holistic lens. The following essay will outline the theory as created by the “lady with the lamp” Florence Nightingale. We will look at the different components that are important to a patient’s health and outline on to incorporate these components into current practice.
