The vowels should be pronounced with the right quality and the consonants should be sharp and clear in their articulation the speaker has to be particularly careful with personal and place names.”

While I have not experienced discrimination of any kind due to my name, over the years I have had to learn to always correct people when they are mispronouncing it, to show respect for my culture and heritage. This is something I did not always do, as I believed that the correct pronunciation of my name was not a big issue. However, through reading literary works such as ‘give your daughters difficult names' I have begun to understand the cultural significance of names and why it is important to always pronounce them

As a student I always had teachers and classmates mispronounce my name. I would get things like CAR-E-DAD or CARI-DAD as opposed to the correct way CA-RI-DA and I would never understand why people just couldn’t get it right. I would find myself upset and bothered and wanted to change my name to a more Americanized name. However, as I grew older I learned that my name was my identity and I no longer wanted to change it. I now want to embrace my name and all of the pronunciations that come with it.

Today’s civilization is full of corruption and deceitfulness. It can be viewed from our society that the more authority one has, the more easily corrupted they become. Policing is a job that requires a lot of stress management and authority execution. This execution requires a lot of ethical consideration, especially considering what kind of effect police officers can have on a situation. The power that a police officer has, combined with the stress he or she can receive can ethically cause a lot of trouble if that officer is not prepared.
If there is something that being in the military has taught me, is that not everyone understands the same way, nor do they appreciate the same things. My choice of topic and delivery for this course will be affected because my cultural sensitivity will do it’s best to deliver the message in a non-threating and non-offensive manner. “One of the most important things you need to learn as a public speaker is showing respect for your audience” (The Ethics of Public Speaking, 2016).
