While interviewing school counselor, Melissa Gomes from Friendship Southeast Elementary Public Charter School, I was able to obtain a lot of information pertaining to a school counselor’s profession. Although, I have acquired plenty of information about a school counselor occupation throughout the last year and half of attending Trinity, the interview was very beneficial and knowledgeable. Ms. Gomes gave great insight that allowed for a better understanding of a school counselors role. Gomes expressed that things became extremely different for her when she started working in the District of Columbia with elementary school students. She explained that her role drastically changed because of the urban setting. She mentioned that she does not counsel children and she mainly provide resources to the children and their families. Ms. Gomes stated that it is very challenging for her to provide the quality of care aligned with her job description since she works at an urban school. Ms. Gomes mentioned that the school needs her in so many other ways that it often prevents her from doing her job which is ensuring that the child is developing properly socially and emotionally. Gomes to perform her rightful duties as a school counselor because the principal is sometimes unaware of the school counselor’s job description. Ms. Gomes explained that administrative is not always supportive and may sometimes give her a difficult time when it comes to her duties. Ms. Gomes expressed that she has had several disagreements with administrative and the principal about what she should and should not be doing. She explained that she had to advocate for herself and ensure the principal that she can be very essential if she does what she is supposed to be doing as a school counselor. She expressed that things begin to fall in place once she and the principal build a rapport, and seen her value. To complete section one, we will use the Missouri Comprehensive Guidance Program, Francis Howell School District’s Comprehensive Guidance Program Manual, the district’s IIR’s from previous school years, the district’s Strategic Plan, the job description and responsibilities of professional school counselors that is located in the district’s manual, and any current evaluation from administration, faculty, staff, parents, and students regarding the counseling program. When Samantha Kisamitakis was a young child she, “Didn't have a lot of support growing up because of my dysfunctional family that was only looking out for themselves. I had to buy my own clothes, food, and my own phone.” She realized that when she had her first child that she had to do something in her life. So at the age of 20 she tried going to college with a one year old by her side. But, her family wasn’t helping with the child, so she had to take a break.
A. There are several significant discussion points and topics that I want to address with my site supervisor about my interactive presentation. My goal is for faculty, administrators, and parents to understand the importance and need for school counselors according to the Missouri Comprehensive and Guidance Counseling Program. I want to ask my supervisor what she believes are the most important roles and responsibilities of a school counselor that I should include and incorporate into my presentation. For nearly 10 years, I have worked with students with behavioral needs in several different schools. In addition to working with students, I have also supported teachers and other school staff members in their efforts to stabilize each child’s behavior. The American School Counselor Association (2014) mindsets and behaviors standards, task school counselors with making sure that the comprehensive school counseling program helps students to be able to accomplish those mindsets and behaviors within the areas of academic, career, and social-emotional development. I observed at Lake shore learning Academy. It is located on the south side of Chicago. I observe in the toddler classroom the teacher name is Kayla Brown. She has been working as an Early Childhood teacher for about six years. She has her associate degree in early Childhood education.
My major is Early Childhood Education and I am looking forward to teaching pre-k. For my first clinical I was sent to Hilldale Elementary School, located in Putnam City. I was paired with Yolanda Castellanos and her pre-k class. She has a class with about 24 students in it. Almost 3 of the students won’t be at school in a given week. About 70 percent of the students in her classroom are Hispanic.

The career I chose to research is a Child Care Center Administrator. A Child Care Center Administrator is known to be in charge of toddler-aged programs or daycares who share the academic or non-academic requirements. He/she has to be able to love children and be able to work with them while also being able to take care of the business side of the Child Care Program. Some duties that the administrator may hold is monitoring a child’s progress of intellectual and emotional development and assist anyone who has a concern with the program or building.
