The oldest out of the three universities is Harvard, which was officially established in 1636 by The Great and General Court of the Massachusetts Bay Colony. Harvard, being the first and only university in the United States for approximately the next 57 years received a good financial upbringing through its benefactors. Its most remembered benefactor is also its namesake, John Harvard. Harvard was a Cambridge-educated puritan who, in his will, gave eight hundred dollars and his library to the newly founded university, reinforcing his puritanical beliefs of the importance of education, and thereby setting a precedent for many more generous endorsements to come.
