How does music play a big role in our daily life?
What is music? Well, according to composer Edgard Varèse, “Music is organised sound” [1]. We probably listen to music everyday, whether we notice it or not. When we watch TV, there is most likely to be some music in the background. When we are at school, chimes are played during breaks. When we enter a convenient store, we are welcomed by greeting music. Little things like these can affect our bodies and brains. Of course, lots of us also listen to music intentionally, in the car, on the radio, music classes, etc. This can also help improve our lifestyle and affect how we act towards our surroundings. Since we use music so often on a daily basis in various ways, it is quite clear that music does play a big role in our daily life, with many different reasons.

Even better, neuroscientists has proven that for those of us who can play instruments, it is like our brains are working out- various informations are all being processed at the same time in a very quick speed [8]. This is because playing an instrument engages all area of the brain to work at once, especially the visual, auditory and motor cortices[8]. Furthermore, when practicing music, it increases the functions in your brains, making your knowledge expand [8]. Listening to familiar music also makes us focus more because we will know how the song sound like, therefore we will put more of our attentions to our work [10]. Music also enhances our memory functions because it engages our hippocampus, which means we will be able to remember a lot of information we learn and therefore will come in handy in tests
