“Never again,” is a trending phrase and is what a lot of Filipinos are saying nowadays with regards to the Marcos family once again stepping into political power. With the aftermath of Martial Law, the country would have been wise enough to not do anything that would make it repeat. Never again. After hundreds of years of being under another country’s rule and having to face the reckless acts of corrupt leaders from the Spaniards to the Americans and so on, one would think the Filipino people are wise enough not to fall for that again. Never again. There are countless tales about brutality and violence and corruption during the Martial Law era but these days, it seems people do not even have a clear grasp of what Martial Law was really about and what it meant for the people at the time – especially the milliennials.
Despite the number of people who were under the rule of Martial Law, their voices are still hushed. Not many people remember the tale of the battered body that fell from the sky because his father wrote an article against Marcos. Not many people recall the tyranny of former President Marcos and the number of human rights violations his term had incurred. Not many people seem to mind that until now, every Filipino still owes P61000 to

But the same children are being taught about the Death March, wars and even sometimes rape (for example, El Filibusterismo). Yes, some of the events during the Martial Law were gruesome, but that is why I propose for it to be taught in secondary schools. Teenagers would have more understanding and can stomach what is being taught. With the movies coming out nowadays, gruesome and bloody stuff are common. So, the reason that it is too gruesome to be taught has so many holes around it. Why start to teach us about the rule of the Spanish, and then completely overlook another point in our history where we fought for our
The claim that it was the Americans who were wronged in the border battle was deeply seeded within the propaganda published by the American newspapers. Statements such as the one stated in Document B, “Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States, has invaded our territory, and shed American blood,” exhibit the dramatic retellings of the fight to reflect upon Mexican savageness while neatly avoiding American flaws. It was also rooted into American morale that it was correct to annex Texas from the “imbecile and distracted, Mexico [who] can never exert any real government authority,” according to Document A. Ultimately, the question of which country was justified in the Mexican-American War is debatable. However, to side with the Americans would mean disregarding the blatant disrespect displayed by the settlers, the betrayal of the American government for the annexation of what was still viewed as Mexican land, and the ambiguity of the border dispute for both.
Even though, during war the United States rather argued it’s nobleness in world matters, protecting Cubans and Filipinos from Spaniards. An exemplar of this is America issuing the Teller Amendment; which declared that Americans had no interest in taking political control in Cuba. But, later the Teller Amendment was proved wrong by the Platt Amendment, which stated that; Cuba would never sign a treaty with foreign power, impairing it’s independence, let America maintain independence and order in the country, and the United States maintain Guantanamo Bay a permanent base. Therefore, the U.S. controlling Cuba’s policies. The Filipinos as well are another exemplar of it, during the Spanish-American war they were offered independence but, later on were taken as United States territory until, the Filipino Revolution led to independence.
American history is full of events that have changed the curse of its history, some more recent than others, an often overviewed war or conflict is the Mexican war, probably because it was only 13 years before of one of the most bloodshed periods and important periods of this country 's history, the Civil War; the Mexican War might have nit had as big as an impact as that of the Civil War, but nonetheless it was a period that is certainly important, we can also think that no war is ever unimportant (Shaara,10). Since the Louisiana purchase, there was a fervor for expansion among the American people, in 1845 the then independent nation of Texas was annexed by the United states (Shaara, 12). But there were several doubts about what was the real
The U.S. refused to consult countries in the regions about their affairs (Paterson 347). As a result, many countries involved in the Spanish-American war formed liberation movements to combat the influence of Spain and the U.S. In conclusion, the U.S. had superimposed its influence over these countries by managing their trade and governmental affairs and created a regional
In the 16th Century, Spain became one of the European forces to reckon with. To expand even further globally, Spanish conquistadors were sent abroad to discover lands, riches, and North America and its civilizations. When the Spanish and Native American groups met one another, they judged each other, as they were both unfamiliar with the people that stood before them. The Native American and Spanish views and opinions of one another are more similar than different because when meeting and getting to know each other, neither the Spaniards nor the Native Americans saw the other group of people as human. Both groups of people thought of one another as barbaric monsters and were confused and amazed by each other’s cultures.
Thirdly, a second reason the Mexican War was not justified because US soldiers were in a disputed area. According to Jesus Velasco Marquez from “A Mexican Viewpoint on the War With the United States,” he states that “From Mexico’s point of view, the annexation of Texas to the United States was inadmissible for both legal and security reasons.” As well as, “The American government acted like a bandit who came upon a
There were many important causes and effects of the Spanish American War. In the 1880’s the U.S. wanted to achieve manifest destiny and so they expanded out west and took control over the Native Americans. There were four different motives that the United States could’ve used to imperialize: political and military interest and economic interest were mostly with trading. Humanitarian and religious interest, to help those that you have allied with or to spread religion and the rich help those who were “under privileged.” Lastly, social darwinism, the idea that you are superior than someone else.
When Mexico gained its independence from Spain in 1821, a string of ruthless dictators and weak presidents made Mexico an easy target for its powerful neighbor, the United States. The US swooped in to expand its territory and its popular institution of slavery. By doing so, the US started a war with Mexico that was justified for illegitimate reasons. The Mexican-American War was not justified because the US took Mexico’s land for the expansion of slavery, and justified their taking advantage of Mexico when it was politically weak by hiding behind Manifest Destiny.
Firstly, the students need to aware of and understand the magnitude of the massacre. The lack of information could lead to many misconceptions. For example, in the Jim Keegstra case of 1985-1992, Keegstra was claimed to have taught students that, “an International Jewish Conspiracy is working to destroy Christianity and create a new world government based in Israel.” (Calgary Herald)These type of ideas can create confusion in young people’s minds and make them think that it never occurred. They should be taught the whole aspect and realize that not all German people were Nazis.
This evening, the camp received a copy of the violent General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna’s speech to his soldiers, and it as absolutely nonsensical! He disrespected our proud Texans by claiming us all as killers and wretches! The half begotten, son of a leprous donkey doesn’t realize how he idiotically spoke of his country in such a guiltless and faultless tone. It had been they who abolished the federal system and supported a tyrannical ruling! He even had the nerve to call his country generous!
Although the Soviet Union may have banned it because it violated their ideas and parents may have thought it was too violent, it teaches children to develop their own behavior and characteristics rather than the government deciding how someone is to live. This dissuades people from not being aware of authoritarian governments that can destroy one’s freedom, especially
The fact that they took advantage of these people in their own land is just upsetting. Another thing the Spanish did was they “built” a church in the center of every town while all the important
The Philippines had been fighting for their freedom against the Spanish for many years. Naturally, when America defeated the Spaniards in the war, the Filipinos rejoiced at the thought that they may be able to finally return safely and peacefully back to their home, Manila. Where this information comes from in the text, would be: “These Filipinos believed that
Although the United States war against Mexico resulted in the gaining of America’s most valuable land, the war itself wasn’t legitimate because of the revolution in Texas, motivation for superiority, and the U.S. government’s actions. To begin, the Texans began an unreasonable war because they didn’t follow Mexico’s laws and conditions. When Mexico started selling cheap land, they set conditions for the people moving in. The people had to convert to Catholicism, learn Spanish, become a Mexican citizen, and have no slaves. Many Americans didn’t like being told what to do, and disobeyed the rules and laws.
The Spanish-American War occurred in the midst of discontent among Cubans and Puerto Rico, upset with America’s increased economic influence.
