Richard et al. (2009) stated that organisational performance lays emphasis on three precise end-results for an organisation which are, financial performance, product market performance, shareholder return. The purpose of this essay is to understand how different types of leadership and styles affect organisational performance. Firstly, leadership is explained. It was brought about by John Adair in 1973. The performance of the leader is determined by three aspects, achieving the common task, where the leader has to do planning, controlling and achieving the task. He supervises the performance of the members, and keeps track of the development of the organisation. Team maintenance, that is, keeping the team together, working on the motivation and inspiration of the group. They make sure that there is an active link and positive relation among the group members. Individual needs of group members cater individually to each members of the group in an organisation. Balancing these three aspects is the key in achieving the goal set for the organisation’s growth. This brings about more productivity into the work performance of the organisation. The servant leadership was suggested in 1970 by Robert Greenleaf. Leadership traditionally is where the leader is in power but here the power is shared. The need of others is out before the leader. This leadership form creates a link between the individuals and brings about better inputs due to the freedom in work. However, this form was criticized by Wong. The basic principle of servant leadership is serving others and the community. The three principles of the servant-leadership are sharing the power, putting the needs of others first and helping people achieve their highest potential so that they may want to serve others. This creates an environment of trust, collaboration, teamwork and group improvement. Robert Greenleaf created the term, Servant Leader, and creating the idea of leading by serving with individuals and organizations. In one of his major essay’s, The Institution as Servant, Greenleaf (as cited in “What is Servant Leadership,” n.d.) expressed what was frequently called the “credo.”
Throughout history, servant leaders have been at the forefront of successful organizations. Servant leadership is rare, when compared to other leadership styles and according to Northouse (2014), focuses on leadership from the point of view of the leader and their behavior. Greenleaf (1970) argues the servant
One model of leadership being adopted by many organizations, disciplines, and vocations is servant leadership. A servant leader is defined as “those who believed they must put other people’s needs and interests above their own needs and interests” (GCU, 2013). A servant leader is more focused on serving than leading and puts the interest of the people under him/her first. The end result is a transformation on the follower where they too perform their roles not as tasks allocated but as a service which makes them more engaged, more informed and performed their roles autonomously (GCU, 2013). Servant leadership was coined by Robert K. Greenleaf in The Servant as Leader, an essay that he first published in 1970 (Greenleaf.org, n.d) Servant leader
Servant leadership can be applied from the top of an organization to the lowest member because no one team member is more important than another. This is because each member is dependent upon the other to accomplish their job. This form of leadership provides a positive example of leadership for both junior to highest ranking members of the senior personnel, because of a single team member regardless of rank being attentive, supportive, and helpful to those members of staff below and above them. These
1 Introduction When you hear about the words ‘servant’ and ‘leader’, what would you think about? Many people will come up with the fact those are contrary words. If you draw a hierarchical pyramid in your mind, the servant is placed in the bottom class and the leader is located in the top part on the contrary. However, there is one leadership theory called servant leadership.
Servant leadership as a leadership philosophy was first defined by Robert K. Greenleaf. He described servant leaders as those who achieve results for their organizations by attending to the needs of those they serve. A nurse servant leader looks to the needs of his/her staff and continually asks how they can help them solve problems and promote their personal development. The manager described by my neighbor as a servant leader worked with her staff to help them meet the needs of patients, while coaching them in their professional practice. The ability to provide service is their primary motivator for seeking a leadership role.
In reading “Serve To Be Great’ written by Matt Tenney, I was introduced to a new perspective on leadership. Servant leadership is a philosophy and set of practices that enriches the lives of individuals, builds better organizations and ultimately creates a more just and caring world. Servant leadership is more a way of life than a management technique. Tenney believes that making your employee’s happiness the priority
(Keith, 2018) The practice of servant leadership rooted about two thousand years ago and now, a man named Robert Greenleaf redefined it with his 1970 publication A Servant as Leader. Greenleaf defined the servant-leader as follows: "The servant-leader is servant first... It begins with the natural feeling that one wants to serve, to serve first. Then conscious choice brings one to aspire to lead.

Leadership has been defined in a variety of ways, there are multiple authors and theorists who have tried to define and understand leadership, all leading to varying theories and conclusions, but one thing that is universally understood is the importance of effective leadership and how someone with good leadership skills can impact so many people around them. (Kakabadse and Kakabadse, 1999; Yukl, 2002; Northouse,2013) The main components that have been identified to play a role in leadership are relations between leader and subordinates, interaction form between leader and followers, the influence that the leader has, the way in which the leader behaves and finally a leader’s traits. (Yukl, 2002) These elements that make up a leader, are then used as building blocks to identify the way in which each specific leader deals with its followers.
In this regard, leaders and managers can appear at any level of an organisation and are not exclusive of each other (Germano, 2010). Leadership theories identify leaders based upon traits as well as how their influence and power is used to achieve organizational goals and objectives (Germano, 2010). As such, trait based characteristics include leaders such as autocratic, democratic, bureaucratic and charismatic. On the other hand, leadership that is viewed from the perspective of the exchange of power and its utilisation to secure outcomes, are situational, transactional and transformational leaders (Germano, 2010). It is of paramount importance to consider the different types of theories of management and leadership and their potential impact on organizational strategy being that management and leadership plays a vital role in the success of businesses.

An awareness of leadership styles and their consequences are very important because it may either facilitate or inhabit skill development. The major theories on leadership are the traits, leadership styles and contingency theories.

‘Organizations provide its managers with legitimate authority to lead, but there is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively’ (Lunenburg, 2011). Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership. In today’s dynamic work environment, leaders are expected to challenge the present state of affairs, and to motivate and convince organization members. Managers are needed to assist in creating and maintaining a positive and well-functioning workplace. ‘Leadership and management are often considered practically overlapping concepts’ (Bohoris and Vorria, 2007, p. 1).
