The stress of paying for college is a common one but the pressure on each person varies greatly depending on one’s situation. For me the scholarship funds help greatly because my mother wants to come back to college to get a better job but she has to support not only me but also my sister whom attends a university. In order to pay for everything, my mother has to work multiple jobs while we also work. The scholarships can help me pay for college and textbooks which can allow my mother to take classes as well. This will greatly reduce our stress regarding school expenses that will help me focus on my schoolwork, research, and volunteering.

A simple sentence sparks not only conversations, but also friendship. For me, that sentence was, "Hey, I heard you speak Chinese." This meager attempt to start a conversation sparked an enduring friendship with Brock, a co-worker at the grocery store where I worked part-time. Our friendship helped me overcome debilitating anxiety that made most social interactions stressful as opposed to enjoyable. My anxiety stemmed from nearly all social interactions.
The infamous answer to the question, “What is your primary goal for going to school?” is “to further my education, get a job, and be successful” such a cliché if I must say myself. My goal attending school is to make my family happy, as well as myself. In high school, I did not apply myself like I should have done because I was not sure if college was in my favor. Also, being the child of a single parent wanting to attend college seemed impossible, especially far from home.

At a very young age, I was always expected to receive A’s and B’s in my school assignments, as well as my final grades. However, I was never rewarded or congratulated whenever I did receive those grades because it was already expected of me to achieve them. Hence, a time in which I have experienced failure but also felt like I let my family down was when I received a D in my Critical Thinking course I was already retaking for the second time. The first time I took Critical Thinking was during the summer in which it was an 8-week long course.

As a child, I had no father to guide me on the path to maturity. Even in the idyllic scene of a father and son playing catch, as I tossed the football onto the roof of my house by myself, the roof replaced the person that I was supposed to learn the essence of manhood from. Although my early and painful realization of his absence was distressing, I learned how to rise above my disappointment and become my own motivation. Throughout my life, I have been knocked down, but I was never defeated–that is what defines me as a fighter. Relentless in achieving my goals, I will myself to succeed despite all that deters me.

The first half of this semester was swift and I can’t believe how fast it passed by. College is a whole new world for me that I had never imagined with a lot of new experiences that I hope will shift me into a better and smarter person. There are more things I can do in college that I would have never dared to do in high school and I am happy for these new freedoms. I am able to eat in class, leave class without asking and they don’t care if I pay attention or not. My high school teachers would always tell me to wait for the bell, sometimes would not let me leave and if I did not pay attention they would yell.
