My Opinions of Lewis Model Lewis Model is a chart which plots countries in relation to 3 categories: Linear-actives, Multi-actives and Reactives. British linguist Richard Lewis is a world traveler who speaks ten languages. He was qualified to plot the world’s cultures on this chart. The classifications are reliable in general case. First cultural type is Linear-active. This variety of people are more calculated and have stronger sense of time. They are single-minded when handling things in particular. Lewis gave a definition of Linear-actives:“Those who plan, schedule, organize, pursue action chains, do one thing at a time. Culture is formed in the development of history, especially for distinctive local culture. But the culture cradles of a lot of countries are the same, so many countries have similar culture type. For this reason, Lewis made the chat to classify different national culture, and find out their different characteristics. For example, when China was strong in ancient times, Japan drew on the experiences of China, and shaped their own culture style. So Japanese cultures are similar to Chinese cultures, such as calligraphy, tea culture and so on. This is a important reason why Lewis considered Chinese and Japanese are in the same group. Different customs helped bring into being the different regional cultures. It is the history cause the different customs. So the regional cultures were formed through a long time and history. The differences between regional cultures are usually in several categories: languages, dietary habits, marriage and funeral customs, religions and local-style dwelling houses. As we all know, different areas may have their own dialect. It is because of the geographical isolation. Some kinds of lands are not suitable for some crops, So different areas plant different crops and eat different food. As for the religions and the marriage and funeral customs, they depend on the local people’s traditional ideology. Even a small country, the geology and climate vary a good deal from region to region. So the buildings should be suitable for the environment. Different areas’ environments are not the same, so local-style dwelling houses
