After completing college, Nixon earned a career to be a lawyer, but this did not satisfy him. Also, his parents were not very pleased with his position as a lawyer. 2“He was always the type of fellow that rose to the top and was the president of this and the president of that,” Gerard Kepple agreed, “and always had a sense of leadership.” Therefore, Nixon knew that the only way to leave a mark in history was through politics. Nixon enacted the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA). The purpose of this act established protection of the environment. NEPA created a Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ). Agencies of the Council on Environmental Quality, and White House officials got together to develop environmental policies to protect Earth. On April 22, 1970, American people celebrated Earth Day for the first time. Since the day President Nixon enacted the National Environmental Policy Act, major advances changed the environmental area. On December of 1970, Nixon created the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Before EPA, there was no central authority, but now the protection of the environment is strong. On December 31, 1970, President Nixon signed the Clean Air Act; this bill controls our air pollution. President Nixon signed the Marine Mammal Protection Act, or the Ocean Dumping Act, on October 21, 1972. This Act regulates the dumping of anything harmful towards marine animals. President Nixon signed the Endangered Species Act of 1973 on December 28, 1073; this strengthens the Act and protects many species. Lastly, Nixon proposed the Safe Drinking Water Act of 1974, which protects the nation’s lakes, streams, rivers, wetlands, and other bodies of water.
