The infant cry signal consists of expiratory and inspiratory phases separated by bouts of silence. The signal also usually contains background noise which may be contributed by the environment in which the recording is done or by the recording equipment itself. The signal may also contain non cry vocals produced by the infant which is usually referred to as fussing. It has ben observed that these non cry vocals usually precede or follow a cry utterance. In the context of cry signals the cry utterances both, expiratory and inspiratory, are the regions of interest on which the further analysis would be performed. Hence these must be identified accurately in the presence of background noise and non cry vocals in the signal. One solution to this problem is manually annotating the signal using some sound editing software e.g. Audacity. This method is subjective, time consuming and prone to errors. Moreover it becomes impractical if the data being dealt is large. In such cases there is a need for an automated method to be developed. 1. Audio Segmentation 2
