Social media is a blessing and a curse. In this generation, acces is to technology is so easy that almost everyone has some sort of social media, and with the numerous different types of social media apps available, people can easily become entranced into the virtual world. While everyone has different reasons for using social media, in the long run, it can be detrimental. Many use social media in order to quickly find out what their best friends are up too or find out where their highschool friends have ended up. No one wants to be left behind in this fast-paced technological world, and many state that social media helps create and further improve their connections with people. During the summer, a two month period of time, many people go on trips or are busy and are not able to see their friends, so they maintain their connection through social media. The opposition states that social media allows people to interact with people no matter where one is in the world, making them less lonely. While this may be true, in the long run, social media can become an addictive and unhealthy tool that people can’t live without. Also, the relationships made online are usually not real, and less sincere compared to a face-to-face interaction. There are also many false identities on social media so it is hard to know whether or not someone is who they say they are and engaging with them can be very dangerous. Many people use social media, as a way to escape their own harsh reality and be someone else. Countless people make a social media account under a false name, and use false information to catfish a person, or they use this false identity to bully someone online. These people do this thinking they are safe because there is no way to trace it back to them. This results in others to not trust social media, have a lower self-confidence after getting hate comments on posts, and can lead some people to commit suicide because of cyberbullies. Also, those hiding their true selves behind the screen of a computer start to forget that the comments they leave online can have consequences if they are caught, and once something is posted, it can’t be erased. For example, a rude, racist, or sexist comment can cause a person to be kicked out of university. These derogatory posts and comments can also cause people to become emotionally detached because they forget that their words can affect others. Many deceive people about who they truly are, which can have damaging effects on others, and can cause more people to not want to use social media in fear of being catfished, bullied, or receive
