Malaysia is a tropical paradise country with breathtaking natural beauty. Made up of Peninsular Malaysia and the other two states which is Sabah and Sarawak on the island of Borneo. Other than that, Malaysia is easily accessible from the major cities in the region and the rest of the world. Malaysia has a large amount of population over 18 million people. Because of its central location between the Indian Ocean and the South China Sea, Malaysia has literally become a meeting point for traders and travellers from both the East and West. As this goes on, Malaysia has a multicultural and multiracial population consisting of Malays, Chinese, Indians and few local peoples. Although Malay is the official language, English is also widely spoken, especially when people are discussing about business. English is also important in Malaysia; it is a compulsory subject in all school in Malaysia. With such a varying ethnic composition, it is no surprise that Malaysia has multiple religions. Islam is also the official religion since Malaysia’s population has a lot percentages of Malay but the freedom of worship is practiced. In health care today, there are many different cultures found in our patient population. Patients often have difficulty conforming to medical regimens due to their cultural beliefs and practices. Completing a comprehensive cultural assessment is the key to understanding the specific components of their culture to facilitate effective and efficient nursing care. In this paper I will describe the key components of a comprehensive cultural assessment. Two of the components will be discussed in relation to the Afghan culture and how that impacts providing culturally diverse care.
