1._____ Share a personal challenge that you set for yourself. Why was the challenge important and what was your success at meeting the challenge? A personal challenge I had in my early professional years was speaking in front of large audiences. I would get nervous and began to tremble. It was different than speaking in front of my peers or family. You get one chance to make a first impression. It was important to me to overcome this fear so I committed myself to completing tasks outside of my comfort zone that would push me to practice. Being vulnerable and sharing my fears gave me strength and insurmountable courage. My motivation was internal and I often thought, “60 seconds of insane courage can change my life and the lives of others if I dare to speak confidently.” Speaking in front of crowds now is natural for me.
2._____ What strengths do you have that would be helpful in a leadership capacity? Self-awareness, integrity and positivity are three strengths I possess that would be helpful in a leadership capacity. My ability to be self-aware has allowed me to leverage relationships to gain buy-in from children, teachers and families to reach meaningful school goals. I live by the quote, “Leadership is doing what is right when no one is watching (George Van

My role in promoting diversity is to represent the face and voice of youth in urban as well as rural communities. This role is an opportunity to give hope to those I serve to learn and grow. My goal is to do whatever it takes to ensure all children no matter what their race, socio-economic status or culture, receive a quality education. In some instances, my role in promoting diversity is canceling stereotypes people may have of women, minorities and/or young professionals. It is my goal to challenge the mindsets of educators and coach them through becoming aware of their biases to serve students
Diversity allows students to form their own views and opinions; diversity is vital to the
As stated in the previous chapter connection, there are many challenges that stand in the way of urban education. The main issue discussed in chapter 10 of the book “Affirming Diversity: The Sociopolitical Context of Multicultural Education” by Sonia Nieto and Patty Bode, was the issue of bilingual programs never having enough support by schools. In addition “bilingual teachers have been segregated programmatically and physically from other staff members, making both teachers and students feel isolated from the community (p.380)”. This issue has always been highly debated because while some people believe bilingual programs work, others believe the opposite. Regardless of who is right or wrong, the truth is that we live in a country that
Autobiographical Diversity Paper 1. Environment: I grew up in El Dorado, a midsize town in south central Kansas about 30 miles from Wichita. I used to refer to El Dorado as a small town until I came to Kansas State and met many other Kansans who were from towns with 500 or 1,000 people. That made El Dorado, with a population of 13,000, seem pretty big so I call it a midsize town now.
Ive had many opportunities where I 've presented myself as a leader. I was Normandy Vice Captain in Yr 7 and currently the captain of my club soccer team. 2. What leader skills do you recognise in yourself?
The effectiveness of Diversity and Cultural Competence. Western culture is usually referred to when talking about the culture of the United States. Our culture began its development with the first English settlers in the early 1600’s and continued to evolve from influences from Native Americans and the arrival of immigrants from Asia, Africa, and Latin America. This created a melting pot of cultures which has turned into one of the most influential forces on Earth. Today, with a population exceeding 300 million people, the United States continues to be a place for immigrants, by immigrants, whether as a place of refuge or for those seeking the American dream.
Hello Clara, in the first sentence, do you believe that diversity makes America stronger? Or just the overall highly populated land is what makes America strong? But, I agree, the political structure does become different once immigrants start becoming citizens and begin voting. Since we have individuals immigrating from Latin America, Asia, the Middle East, etc. They all have experienced a different background, so they are all seeking a different form of freedom or opportunities.
Since its inception America has been coined the “melting pot,” a term that’s intended to encase pride over the vast amount of diversity contained within our country. That pride, however, is nothing more than an idealization of the truth. America is a country of great diversity, but its pride and acceptance of that diversity relies on a contingent tolerance. Diversity is a wide term that can refer to a number of different groups and in this context it is referring to groups of minorities in America, particularly the LGBT community. Perhaps, the best illustration of this harmful treatment can be found in the media, specifically in the form of television.
I have developed leadership qualities when my Tae Kwon Do coach trusted me to lead our team during national championships. This has led me to then hold various leadership positions in undergraduate and dental school clubs. Moreover, my critical thinking abilities have excelled from being a mathematics and physics tutor. Tutoring has always challenged me to think outside the box in complicated problems, and this would allow me to use my creative skills when facing complex cases in my field. Persistence is another key element that is crucial in success.
Leaders possess different strengths that allow them to succeed in their career or life. The Clifton Strengths Finder Assessment helped identify my top strengths and how to lead with my strengths in order to further develop them. My top five strengths were competition, positivity, winning others over (WOO), harmony, and achiever. Based on the meaning of each strength, I related to all them, however, I was surprised by some of them.
Strengths Finder Reflection My top five strengths are adaptability, relator, maximizer, empathetic and strategic. It was not surprising to confirm my top five strengths because, in my work and social interactions, I find that I love relating with others and yearn to understand their situations and take them in that light. However, I am also a practical person who likes planning and looking at an issue from all perspectives. I, therefore, believe that I strike a balance as I am not rigid, neither am I too spontaneous, but most of all I try as much as possible to deal with a situation on its merit to maximize on positive outcomes.
Diversity is about treating learners as individuals. A tutor needs to be able to familiarise teaching approaches to accommodate the needs of individual learners. Altogether individuals have the right to be treated with respect and dignity, as everyone is an individual with different needs, abilities and experiences. I think of every learner as the same as all learners and without regard to marital status, race, ethnic origin, colour, religion, sexual orientation, social background or any other distinction. I put my effort to treat everyone with equal dignity and worth, irrespective of the group or groups to which they belong, while also raising aspirations and supporting achievement for people with diverse requirements, entitlements and backgrounds.
My personal strengths is my ability to be innovative & creative, with open mind. These 3 things enable me to be a efficient & effective in my every way of life. Being open to new ideas is very fantastic ways. Compared to those of my peers with others in my life. Being open minded is very good way the adapt & grasp things easily in less time.
In the last few years, the world has been growing more than ever towards the cosmopolitan ideology. This is the result of ethnic heterogeneity, like racial and ethnic backgrounds, religion, culture and ability in a community of people, which continues to play a part in an individual’s or a country’s development. Such growth in variety has its pros and cons. The strengths of a diverse society are cognizance of humanity and ethnic cohesiveness. A flaw would be the possible making of a divided nation.
These traits are intelligence, self-confidence, determination, integrity, and sociability. I recognize all of these traits within myself. Between my leadership history and my strengths, which were identified from the StrengthsFinder Inventory that I completed this past year, I realize that I
Strengths: As a student one of my strengths is organization. I can say I can keep my school materials and notebooks organized in a way that I and others can comprehend. The reason I can say I am organized is because, I have hardly ever had in the past or present any issues with trying to find homework or assignments because I always kept my materials for each class organized and in a place I could easily find. Another strength I have is social skills. I can believe that I communicate with others well in a group.
