One could be taught the language along with having an interpreter. Interpersonal space can be the second miscommunicated area in international employment (Kinicki & Williams, 2012). It is vital to understand the cultural exchanges and personal space. One must become aware of the cultural differences like bowing, hugging, and cheek kisses. One cannot insult another nation due to their inexperience with the traditions. The third international misconception is communication (Kinicki & Williams, 2012). The verbal and non-verbal cues are cautioned and need to be studied before engaging in a global position and offending the culture. The fourth aspect is the time orientation. Again knowing the culture will give one the upper hand if the appointments will be semantic or if they will be dashing between several clients. When I was in high school I remember I had an ELD class- English Learning Development. It was composed of several people who came to the U.S from different parts of the world. There were many students from;Arabic, Mexico, El Salvador, Asians, Egypt, and others. My teacher was very friendly and humorous. In my class, we had different situations, different reasons of why we came to U.S, we had different goals and perspectives and my teacher’s only goal was to makes us one team.
I come from a military background which required me to do a lot of traveling as a child. I lived in Sicily, Italy for about four and a half years before moving back to the United States. Living in two different countries made me flexibility and tolerant which allows me to adapt and respect others cultures while maintaining my own. These qualities proved to be beneficial this previous summer while studying abroad Japan. I find these qualities essential especially for someone seeking to teach abroad, I feel any great teacher should first be a student themselves.
Educators need to develop and enact cultural competency to work effectively with children, families and staff who may have diverse experiences, values an beliefs. We should interact with respect, be constructive and have a positive attitude towards others. We as educators should think critically about ways to interact with children, families, staff and community to enhance relationships and exchange information and limit and decrease stereotypes. Each culture has their own expectations, reactions and expectations. For example, in certain cultures speaking to loudly isn’t appropriate but in other cultures speaking to quietly isn’t appropriate as well. Some gestures that cultures do isn’t appropriate to other cultures. Kissing women on the cheeks is common but is unacceptable to many other cultures. Another gesture is handshaking, it may seem like a common thing to do when you meet someone or even greet someone.
