Julien Joanny Period 6 3/15/17 Sports Essay For Years now, people have been debating about competitive sports and how they are helpful or distracting. We know that competitive sports are bad for kids because they can cause concussions. You will find out the chances of getting a concussion while playing competitive sports, what concussion can do to you, and how they can kill you. Competitive sports raises the chances of getting a concussion.
However, it is also important to note that a concussion can also take place outside of sports, meaning it can happen to anybody. For instance, there have been incidents where a person tripped while running, fell, and the impact of their head’s contact with the ground caused a concussion. Or, in a car accident many front-seat passengers, or even the driver, have slammed their heads against the dashboard/steering wheel, also possibly resulting in a concussion. Concussions when treated can be healed in a timely manner. Unfortunately, throughout history, there has been a tendency for people to overlook a concussion as a serious injury, therefore, making it more problematic than it already is.
Tough luck on the field and courts for players in extreme contact sports happen almost frequently. From broken arms, fingers, shoulders, and etc; no other sports injury is more detrimental to athletes then receiving a concussion. The strength of players to take hard hits and get back to the game is always amazing however it is not safe for the players. Although safety measures and protective wear have improved, players need additional time to bounce back from concussions. Athletes who suffer from concussions have long lasting problems that impair both cognitive and physical functioning.
Concussions themselves are a controversial topic simply because of their destructive forces on the lives of everyone, ranging from people who tripped and fell a little too hard, to people who make a career of hitting other people as hard as they possibly can. There are many people opposed to the idea of football’s inherent violence, yet advocates of the sport claim that removing the factor of colliding would make a completely different sport that cannot even be called football, which itself has become so ingrained in American society that it practically owns a day of the week from Week One of preseason to the closing seconds of the Superbowl. The fact remains though that if football were to suddenly cease existing, many people would be jobless,

Moderate to severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) can cause symptoms similar to a concussion, but individuals with TBIs often experience more severe problems with attention and short-term memory, have difficulty performing daily tasks, and report feeling ‘slower’ overall” (Long-term Effects of Brain Injuries). Brain injuries can always improve, but may never completely go away. “Difficulty making decisions or processing a lot of information, or trouble resolving problems, can have a significant impact on one 's life” (Long-term Effects of Brain Injuries). The matter is very serious and impacting the lives of many athletes around the world.
The Athlete epidemic What does a necklace have to do with stopping the problems of concussions, most people would say nothing and that the only way to stop the problem is with head wear and and teaching kids to protect themselves better so it doesn’t happen to them. But now after years of dealing with this problem could be a solution that could really changes things and help athletes today and in the future. For those that don’t know what a concussion is a head trauma that is caused by getting hit in the head or violently shaking the head or body. You see a lot of this from boxing and soccer but maybe none bigger than football just because of the big hits and how they don’t focus on form tackling which cause the injury.
Head injuries and concussions are what scientist believe have caused these brain diseases in young athletes. These injuries are sustained by serious blows to the head to the point when the brain slams back and forth against the inner head. Traumatic brain injuries are long term effects that are sustained through various blows to the head which scar the brain itself. Unlike TBIs, concussions can be healed in due time as long as the person who has experienced the concussions has followed the necessary procedures and has received enough rest to further help the brain heal. Some head injuries although can lead to these brain diseases.
A simple tap to the head can change someone’s life forever. Athletes like to slap each other’s helmets and shake another player’s head after a good play, what they do not know is that they could give that player a concussion. It is likely that every individual will receive a concussion at some point in their life. Research has been done to look at the effects that concussions have on the lives of professional athletes and now the focus has changed to the effects of concussions of children. The focus is beginning to turn away from how do we prevent concussions to what are the lasting impact of concussions.
This article talks about how coaches could better recognize concussions as they went through an education program that helped them recognize the symptoms of a concussion. Some sports teams may not have certified athletic trainers or doctors on the sideline to take care of a concussion and that leaves the coach to be the first person to try and recognize a concussion. Also, to help coaches recognize concussions, the Center for Disease Control started a program called Heads Up!, which was used at the youth and high school levels. The big issue with the concussion knowledge is that some of these coaches today have misconceptions of concussions because of the magazines and newspapers they read instead of going through coaching education programs to properly get their information on a concussion. For this study, they had to get people who were enrolled in classes related to coaching education majors and minors.
Every person in the world loves football! Football has the highest rates of catastrophic head injuries (16).The long term health effects of high impact sport injures can be super dangerous. “Medical researchers at Boston University recently confirmed that 88 of 92 former NFL players donated their brains for research…”(15). “... NFL players who donate their brains for research suffered from chronic traumatic encephalopathy( C.T.E.), a brain disease induced by repetitive head trauma and linked to depression,aggression,impulse-control problems,memory loss, and dementia”(15).
Football concussions can lead to brain injuries or other serious health issues that can be fatal. Concussions can happen in many different ways, which all involve big hits to the head. Hard hits to a player's head can cause his or her brain to move in different ways which can cause brain bruising or bleeding. A hard hit to a player’s forehead causes the brain to accelerate in a back and forth motion that can make a player feel nauseous or unstable. If the hit is focussed in the left or right side of a player's forehead it can cause the brain to move in a twisting motion which will leave the player light headed and with a headache.
THE INCREASING NUMBER OF CONCUSSION IN ATHLETES ARE DETRIMENTAL TO THE FUTURE OF SPORTS In the recent years, concussions have become a common accident related to various types of sports around the globe. A concussion is a traumatic injury of the brain, they can also be as a result of a sudden blow on the body. Such a blow may cause the head to jerk back and forth in a rapid motion. This may cause a bounce or twist within the skull, which may over stretch the brain, cause cell damage and alter chemical functioning within the brain.
It seems that every week players are getting injured and carted off the field and statistics show that concussions had risen 32 percent between the 2014-2015 seasons, that is 271 concussions in the 2015 season compared to 206 in 2014. There was also an increase of ACL and MCL injuries between the 2014-2015 seasons, although the change was not as drastic. These statistics from ESPN show that there might be a better way to play the game but the leagues and programs insist that the players know the risks of what they are doing.
