Historically armies of Europe usually did not fight wars during the winter months for obvious reasons. But Washington understood from the outset in 1775 that if he were going to win the war with England, he needed to have a fighting force active for 12 months a year. Washington desperately needed to keep his army together for the looming battle at Philadelphia which the English occupied during the winter of 1777-1778 when Washington arrived a Valley Forge which sits northwest of Philadelphia. Washington 's troops were desperately short of rations. Meat tended to be wormy and bread hard. Even so, his troops were constantly fighting hunger, cold and disease. From Valley Forge, Washington could look over General Howe's British army staying in Philadelphia. At Valley Forge, there were shortages of supplies. This was everything from food to clothing to medication. Washington's soldiers were sick from disease, hunger, and exposure.
The people of America (colonists) were tired of being controlled by England. They wanted to be free and independent. They believed that they were able to control themselves and be their own country. They wanted England to let go of their control and to view them as independent and their own country.

The Battle of Trenton happened on the 25th of December in Delaware of 1776. It was short and sweet battle between George Washington and his opponent, Garrison of Hessian.
I am writing to answer some questions you asked about George Washington during your visit to our country. At the time of your visit, I did not know the answers to your questions, but now I do and am better prepared to answer them. From 1754 to 1763 the British and French were involved in a war known as the French and Indian War. The French and Indian War was fought to determine who got what land in North America. It was a long struggle that the British eventually won but at a huge financial cost.
The American Revolutionary War was an important moment in our history as it stood for our freedom from the English monarchy. Many conflicts and battles happened all throughout the country, making it seem as if the Englishmen had the upper hand with their advanced military an naval forces. The Battle of Saratoga proved to be the turning point of the Revolutionary War and convinced the French to support the Americans. The new British commander, Sir Henry Clinton retreated from Philadelphia to New York. George Washington decided to attack Clinton’s force as the British army moved through New Jersey. Marquis de Lafayette was initially chosen to lead the attack, but an objection by Major General Charles Lee allowed him to take command. After learning that British reinforcements were getting close, Lee ordered his soldiers to retreat.
Winning a war is not easy, which is why the British hired a highly trained, German Mercenary group to fight the colonists. After a recent string of patriot victories, the British needed someone to help fight the colonists. So, they hired an army from Prince Frederick II of Hesse-Cassel to bolster their ranks, and gain control of the colonies. These mercenaries were known as the Hessians. The Hessians were German soldiers hired to help the British in the American Revolution, but after the war many of them deserted, and settled in America.
The times of Valley Forge were probably the worst times for the colonists. Disease, lack of supplies, and lack of food were all things that happened during the winter of Valley Forge. There are many famous Americans that helped America win the Revolutionary War. Benedict Arnold however, did not and tried to aid the British to victory. Benedict Arnold was born on January 14, 1741 in Norwich, Connecticut. Arnold’s father was a successful businessman who wanted his son to be well-educated and successful as well. After three of Benedict’s siblings died, his father fell into an alcohol fueled depression.
The soldiers were inadequately trained and lacked ammunition, food, and other provisions. They sometimes even went without clothing and went barefoot in the winter. However, General Washington was able to give them direction and encourage them to persevere. The common soldier would prove important.
