In days gone by the world was quite a different place to what it is now. Time went slower, there was less money in circulation and options were not so easy to come by. Roles and responsibilities were well defined and women knew their place, or at least some of them did. As sane as days gone by might seem in fantasy, and as logical as they might appear to the rule abiding soul, they were fraught with their own risks and dangers. Women were for the most part dependent on their husbands. The man went off to work while the women stayed home and nurtured the children. Divorced women usually struggled and often actively sought out a new provider, settling for the next best thing. Single mothers were shunned, demonised and classified as the outlaws of society, destined to raise scoundrels and delinquents. Widows who had not married rich were also destined to suffer and go without; spending a life time mourning the man who was supposed to make provision for everything. The modern world is far more complicated and competitive than the one our parents and grandparents knew. It’s faster, harder, filled with a lot more stress and complexity. It is no longer fair for women to put the full burden of their wellbeing on a man for he has his own complicated battles to fight. Ask most women how they would feel if they had to work full time, over time and have sleepless nights trying to figure out how to take care of the family while their husband stayed home and nurtured the children and spent money that they did not have. The answer is normally a resounding “NOT ON YOUR LIFE.” So why should it be alright for women to rest on their laurels? The sexes are not equal. Each one has its strengths and weaknesses and each should be celebrated for their magnificence but neither should become a burden on the other if it can be helped. And it usually can be
