From the medieval and ancient world comes many superior societies. From the dust of the ancient world comes the cities of Athens and Sparta. Athens and Sparta are both known for, but not limited to, their military and political power. Sparta is known for their impeccable military and utter brutality. Athens is known for their contribution to the creation of democracy. Even though both of these cities were two most influential societies to the modern day they do differ in many aspects. Along with the differences of lifestyles, Sparta and Athens also differed in their cultures. Athens is known for a very political culture. Athens is credited for contributing to modern day democracy. Athens was a society that had many different systems of democracy. Because there are different species of justice systems, there will be a difference in way that system works (Aristot. Const. Athen.) . Athens operated on a political system where decisions were made by men and solely for the province of men (Roberts, 25.) This made Athenian culture revolve around the men. Whether the men where middle class or leisure life, their vote was taken into account when making political decisions. Along with the democratic culture, Athens economy was a wide variety of manufacturing and trade. Athens is known for always having an outstanding navy and because of the ability to be able to allocate a way to trade throughout the Mediterranean, they relied heavily on trade. Even though trade was a major factor in their economy, the middle class man in Athens made an economic difference. A middle class man job profession ranged anywhere from a small business owner to a farmer. Professions in Athens consisted of farming, mining, manufacturing, and overseas trade . Because trade was such a big economic factor for Athens the relied on that trade and were not really self-sustaining. How they perceived that religious background varied dramatically. Religious ideologies differed between the two societies. Athens, named after the Greek goddess Athena, saw religion as a very important part of their society. Monuments were built in favor of the Gods and the Athenians saw religious practices and rituals as patriotic duties in reverence to the Gods . Athenian way of showing homage to their religious beliefs and ideologies was very materialistic. Sparta did not have the same views on religion. Sparta had simplistic ways of practicing religion. While Sparta did worship the Gods, the showed their respect to the Gods by living their life in the old Greek way. Spartans believed they inherited this idea of a simplistic lifestyle from the Greek Gods themselves. The Spartans chose to live a simple life that involved individuals living and dying solely for their country, individuals practicing self-discipline along with practicing self-denial; this way of living was believed to be how the Gods wanted them to live. Sparta was once one of the most important Greek city-states throughout Greece, famous for their military lifestyle. When you think of a Spartan warrior, you vision a man with huge muscles, red cloaks, long hair, and sharp swords. Spartan warriors were the best and feared fighters in Greece, they spend their whole lives learning new fighting techniques and serving their home, Sparta. At around six or seven years old, young boys would be taken from their homes to be trained as Spartan warriors.

In, Athens and Sparta, it shows all the differences between the Athenians and the Spartans. Although the two City States shared a common heritage, their differences grew so large in their own minds that they were ultimately willing to engage in a life-and-death struggle to support their separate realities (Spielvogel).
Sparta Vs. Athens Sparta was a militaristic and warrior city in ancient Greece, it was focused on loyalty on the military service and the state. The people of Sparta were also known for their strengths that were built by them at a very young age. At the age of seven, Spartan boys began education and military service training that was supported by the state. Though Spartan women were not serving the military, they still were educated and got to have more status and freedom, and rights than the rest of the Greek women.
Some people think that Sparta was a better city-state because of its military program; however, there are many more reasons Ancient Athens was a better city-state. On the other hand, Athens and Sparta gained allies with other civilizations in relation with trade, or exploration. Despite this, Athens and Sparta never considered becoming allies, since both civilizations greatly believed in their own opposing lifestyles.

There were many cases of bribery in the government that wasn't taken seriously by the court. In Sparta power was given to citizens through the assembly which consisted of all male citizens in Sparta, but in theory anyone could participate. The government had an elaborate system of checks and balances to make sure that no branch had more power than another. Also contrary to popular belief the Spartans treated there slaves bette than the Athenians. The slaves in Sparta were actually known as helots who were lower class citizens.

Even to this day, we still use Athens and Sparta’s societal systems and structures because they were so revolutionary. Athens even introduced the idea of democracy, and Sparta had a strong military culture. Although Athens and Sparta were close together, Athens focused on leadership and education while Sparta focused on the military and war. However, due to their different governments and cultures, each has their strengths and weaknesses. However, because Athens focuses on its future leaders, Athens is the better model for a society.
Overall, ancient Athens was indeed not truly democratic as a result of the government having male citizens have authority, being an oligarchy government instead of a democratic government, and voting not accessible to women, free foreigners(Metics), and slaves except for male citizens. The Athenian and the Spartan civilizations were very unique and different but the people shared many similar ideas. The Athenians believed that their government was original and that everyone should participate directly in government. On the other hand, the Spartans believed that every man should train for the military. Both the Spartans and Athenians believed in an equal society where the members were devoted to the polis.
