Contrasting Leadership Models Leadership models are developing to adapt to the changing needs of people and the surrounding environment (Dye, 2017). It is important for leaders to be flexible and take part in change to guide their teams and organizations to success. Over time, the theories of leadership have grown and taken different forms. The great man theory and trait theory were the initial concepts used to explain leadership. Situational leadership theories and transactional theories then emerged to help shape our understanding of leadership. This discussion will address the differences between the early theories of leadership vs. current theories of leadership, value-based

Using certain leadership values, leaders can create a positive work environment for followers to succeed. In a healthcare environment, values such as respect, ethical behaviors, and integrity are crucial to providing proper patient care (Dye, 2017). I currently work in healthcare and always aim to integrate respect, ethical behaviors, and integrity in all my work. By prioritizing these values, I create a culture of trust, compassion, and high-quality care in my workplace. One way I plan to enhance my leadership skills in the healthcare industry is by being aware of my values and the values that are essential for effective leadership. It is important under value-based leadership to clearly understand what drives us as individuals and how those values can translate into being a successful leader (Dye, 2017). Awareness, action, and achievement will allow me to understand how my internal values drive my external behaviors (Dye, …show more content…
While popular literature focuses on practical advice and tips for leaders, academic literature delves into the theories and concepts behind leadership (Dye, 2017). One common issue with popular leadership literature is there are often claims made without sufficient evidence to back them up (Dye, 2017). With popular leadership literature, it is vital to make there is valid evidence to support all leadership claims. Without this support, it's difficult to determine whether the ideas apply to effective leadership (Dye, 2017). One way I can become a better critical consumer in my field is to do my research and fact-check claims before incorporating any ideas into my leadership style. I will approach popular leadership literature with a critical eye and take the time to research the evidence behind the claims being made. Using this approach, I can gain a better understanding of the principles of effective leadership and how to apply them to my life. Overall, effective leaders can combine both practical knowledge and theoretical understanding to motivate
Leadership has many definitions. Chin, Desormeaux, and Sawyer (2016) define leadership as a relationship between followers and a leader with the intent to promote change through a mutual vision. Therefore, leaders are active influences in the outcome of organizations, through their decision-making, strategies, and influence on followers (Dinh et al., 2014). Additionally, in the nursing context, it has been documented that a leader 's style plays a factor in patient outcomes (Fischer, 2016). Indeed, in an ever-changing, complex health care environment, nursing leadership has become a crucial factor in managing challenges and maintaining patient safety (Fischer, 2016).
Leadership is of utmost importance because it has the ability to serve as a driving force for many individuals. By curating an environment of communication, direction, motivation, and guidance, a leader is able to progress towards growth and success. Many think that leaders have to be appointed, but that is simply not true. In the book You Don't Need a Title to Be a Leader by Mark Sanborn, many eye opening points and advice was presented. The book gives insight on characteristics of leaders, stories that correlate with the point being made, ways to improve your leadership capabilities, and more.
Wong (2015) addresses that 50% of studies that have addressed patient outcomes found clinical leadership to be at fault for morbidity, mortality, and increased hospital stays versus the primary condition of the patient. Transformational leadership was found to be a key leadership theory in decreasing patient adverse events, such as from medication errors and hospital acquired infections (Wong, 2015). The results from these studies determined that transformational leadership contributes to a healthy work environment by boosting staff support, open and honest communication, and trust, which promotes positive team working relationships (Wong,
In developing this paper on leadership, I examined what was most important to me as a leader. As I reflected on my leadership philosophy, I thought about my experiences and the principals that I have learned through my own self-discovery and the observation of other leaders that I have had throughout my life. My leadership philosophy paper will focus on what leadership is to me, core values, and knowledge of others. In thinking about my definition of leadership, I thought of what was most important to me in and as a leader.
I’ve been told that I am a natural-born leader my whole life. I used to think leadership was simply about confidence, but it is comprised of so much more. Leadership encompasses values of collaboration, mutual respect, and the commonality of a goal. As I’ve gotten older, my definition of leadership has shifted as I have surrounded myself with strong leaders who not only encourage but inspire others to be better. Within the healthcare field, leadership is always evolving.
Management and leadership styles strategically utilized throughout Facility B included democratic approaches, which focused on exceptionally strong teamwork, where employees felt empowered to report issues and concerns to maintain resident safety. Facility B exhibited high-performance teams with innovative practices, and employees were rewarded for their contributions and also offered career advancement opportunities. Management and leadership principles used by the administrator at Facility A varied from Facility B in
Healthcare is a complex industry and these skills are essential to a smoothly run system. For instance, leadership skills are considered very important because good leaders are able to be authoritative but also have an interpersonal relationship with the people they are mentoring or leading (Cushing, 2016). This creates a positive work environment and enhances quality of care given to patients. Furthermore, a well-rounded leader in the health care industry will create opportunities for their employees and introduce them to challenges while also supporting them though the situation (Cushing, 2016). Also, a skill incorporated into leadership that can be connected to management is the change factor of healthcare.
Introduction: Any organization recognizes the significance of leadership and its crucial role in achieving their goals and success. In healthcare organizations, the complexity of the system and the difference in defining its success goals are reshaping the practice of leadership and its standards. According to House et al. (2002, p.5) a leader is able to influence, motivate, and enable others to contribute to the success of the organization or task. Healthcare and business settings are different in terms of goals and system contexts.
Authentic Leadership is a complex process that is tough to describe, there are three main definitions along with two approaches to this leadership style. The first definition describes a focus on the leader and their internal processes, the second is relational and created by leaders and followers together, and the last describes the unfixed nurturing of a leader or the constant development of a leader (Northouse, 2016, p.196). The two approaches concerned with this approach are practical and theoretical, in this philosophy, a theoretical approach is emphasized in this philosophy. The practical approach discusses essential qualities and characteristics whereas the theoretical approach is based on the behavior of leaders; which can be more validly
In spite of the fact that’ leadership analysis’ is the art of breaking down a leader into basic psychological components for study and use by academics and practitioners, a sound leadership analyses
In fact, leadership is an art rather than a science. The process of learning leadership is a hand-on experience, which focuses on practice instead of concepts itself. This course provides me a chance to gain more insight about leadership and it helps me develop my new image of leadership. Meanwhile, I also use the theories in our textbook as a framework for self-assessment of my leadership skills and try to develop my own leadership style during the
We should be grateful to the author for writing a perceptive and valuable book for practitioners which provides both empirical and practical value of enhancing leadership and managerial
Through self-reflection and academic readings, I have discovered that I identify with three different leadership theories. During the first meeting in a Strength Based Leadership class, we were asked to write our leadership history. The class then began an ongoing exploration of various leadership theories. Upon reviewing my leadership history from the first class and synthesizing the information from the theories that were examined, I discovered that I most resonate with the Trait Leadership Theory, the Skills Leadership Theory, and the Path-Goal Leadership theory. These theories are leader focused, describing the process and techniques a leader uses to accomplish goals.
This paper is going to encompass different leadership theories and their relevance to my own personal personality and method of leadership. There will be information on the advantages and disadvantages of the leadership theories and information on each including examples. The purpose of this paper is to view various kinds of leadership theories and apply them to a real-life scenario. Leadership Theories There are quite a few different leadership theories available for people to take information from and use in business settings and even personal settings.
‘Organizations provide its managers with legitimate authority to lead, but there is no assurance that they will be able to lead effectively’ (Lunenburg, 2011). Organizational success usually requires a combination of both management and leadership. In today’s dynamic work environment, leaders are expected to challenge the present state of affairs, and to motivate and convince organization members. Managers are needed to assist in creating and maintaining a positive and well-functioning workplace. ‘Leadership and management are often considered practically overlapping concepts’ (Bohoris and Vorria, 2007, p. 1).
