Factors that Affect the Decline in Academic Performance of Students in Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan The rapid decline in academic performance of students in the recent years has yield major impact in our country’s educational development as well as in economic and social development. According to Todaro (2004), “a country which is unable to invest in education to develop knowledge and skills of her people and utilize them effectively in national economy will be unable to develop anything else” (as cited by Hijazi and Naqvi, 2006, p.1). School-related factors Significance of the Study It is essential to acquire information on the factors that affect the decline in academic performance of students to raise awareness about which of these factors mostly affect the grades of students. A student’s academic performance may not necessarily be affected by external factors such as teacher-related factors and school related factors. According to Eccles, Midgley and Adler, in most studies surveyed, attitude towards school and towards their own academic competence decline with age (1984, p. 289).
