The North had railroad links that would transport their supplies, guns, ammunition, and uniforms from their factories to the frontlines. At the time the North had a population of 22 million people against the 9 million in the South (of whom almost half were slaves.) The North was more industrial and produced 94 percent of the USA’s pig iron and 97 percent of its firearms.
Northern farmers grew many different types of crops. Where Southern farmers only grew one “cash” crop. This caused the development to change because when the North had extra food they would send it to the west indies where they only grew tobacco or cotton they needed food so they got it from the North. The North had many advantages. They beat the South in population they could draw soldiers from. The North had 22 million citizens where the South only had 5.5 million citizens. The North could transport supplies and people faster because of their roads, canals, and railroads. However the South disconnected from itself with barely any railroads and hard to move soldiers and goods from place to place.
Economic: The southern economy was good because the British helped with the demand of cotton. Social: The North was happy because over $830 million went to the war effort and they benefitted greatly. Summary: The transportation of people and goods were changed by the invention of the steamboat and the railroad.
North & South There was an invention that changed life in both the North and the South, but in very different ways. Whitney a Northerner living in the South had already noticed differences between the two areas, so it was not a surprise to him. Northerners and Southerners were both American Citizens sharing an aggressive pride in their country. These two areas were both very different in their economies, societies, and transportation systems. Geography in the North had a wide variety of climates, from Maine to Iowa.
Economy The North’s economy primarily relied on industry. Before the Industrial Revolution, much of the North’s economy consisted of small-scale farming. Starting in the 1800s, many started working in factories. The American first factories manufactured textiles, using cotton grown in the South to produce cloth.
In fact, with all their differences, the three regions later combined to create the great nation known today as the United States. One of the big differences between the three regions was their topography and climate, which led to different types of agriculture. For instance, the New England Colonies had many mountains and forests due to its glaciers. Since it had sandy soil, short summers and long lasting winters, the Puritans who landed in New England weren’t able to farm many types of crops. The cold weather negatively impacted their agriculture.

Northern Carolina and Southern Carolina Northern Carolina and Southern Carolina were very different. In Northern Carolina their main crop was tobacco instead of rice and many of the early settlers came from Virginia. The sounds were not deep enough to permit seaports, so the northern settlers kept their ties to Virginia in order to have a port from which they could ship tobacco. In Southern Carolina their main crop was rice and Indians were the first slaves the southern settlers had, and later African Americans took their place. Three counties that were in the Southern Carolina is Berkeley County, Colleton County, and Craven County. Northern and Southern Carolina had many different things about them like crops and settlers.
The treatment of slaves between the North and the South was drastically different. Slaves in the North typically lived in the same house as their master and worked by themselves, or in small groups (pg. 94). Slaves in the South tended to live in large plantations in which they were housed in plantation outbuildings (pg. 104). The difference between the North and the South in housing and working environment had a direct effect on the integration of African Americans into their new American society. When they were housed in the North with their masters and had limited exposure to other slaves, they tended to adopt the ways of their masters.
There were many differences between the North and the South. For instance, the South were very agricultural as opposed to the North which were industrial. The South used cheap labor in the form of slaves, whereas the North had workers do their jobs in factories at a faster pace. Because of sectionalism, competition between the north and the south began to increase.
North and South had economic, political and cultural differences. South economy was connected to cotton as vital staple. Cotton was very profitable and many slaves were needed to work on plantations. People that didn’t have enough money to invest on property move North for job opportunities. After the War of 1812 industrialization in the North expanded tremendously.
