Traffic violations have been a day-to-day incident throughout our country. It has always been on the list of problems that most countries face. According to a website, speeding remains to be the biggest problem for drivers. Numerous accidents caused by violations had been occurring and continuously claiming lives of many civilians.
The investigation and implementation of different methods for speed determination is a well-known area of interest in the field of Digital Image Processing and computer vision problems. In this study, the researchers intended to measure a bus’ instantaneous speed and identify if it is violating the speed limit. Today, different advanced technologies are emerging in helping the authorities enforce speed limit on roads. With the help of these devices, various methods and strategies are used to help in monitoring the vehicles’ speed on roads. Some of the devices used by the authorities are: Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder (VASCAR), radar speed guns, LIDAR speed guns, and The Infra-Red Traffic Logger (TIRTL). These devices prove to be a big help to the authorities in implementing speed regulations, however, these technologies has limitations that gives way to inaccuracies in speed measurement. Like in radar guns, it takes up to 2 seconds before it can lock on vehicles and hand-held modulation can falsify the readings on it. For LIDAR speed guns, certain colors such as black, blue and violet can be poor reflectors. Also, extreme sunlight can be damaging to LIDAR guns. While in VASCAR, one major disadvantage of it is its use of average speed in calculating a vehicle’s speed. With this, even if a car is over speeding, it may not be detected when using average
