The U.S is one of the biggest advocates for gun rights and also the world leading country for gun ownership. Most recent data shows that we hold first place for country with the most guns per capita at 88.8 per 100 persons.(cbcnews.com) You would think that a country that supports gun ownership that much would allow for them to be carried everywhere with certain exceptions. Our right to keep a gun is protected by the second amendment, which says “A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.” One of the most controversial topics regarding guns is weather or not we should be allowed to carry them on school buildings.
Imagine you are a hunter, you own a gun, use it legally and responsibly, it is your prized possession. How would you feel if our government banned guns and took the right to keep and bear that gun away from you? In this country, there are people that live in the mountains like Alaskans for instance, that use their guns to get their food. These people live in remote areas, do not have groceries stores or neighbors nearby. As a matter of fact, their food supplies are wild game, such as deer and duck, that they hunt for food.
Why take away the protection and recreational shooting practices of innocent citizens because others are irresponsible? Gun control laws are a major issue being discussed in the U.S. right now. Some believe that by condemning the availability of firearms to all, criminals and people with mental illnesses will be less likely to attain firearms. However they are then violating the people’s second amendment right, which give them the right to bear arms. In conclusion we should have better gun control. There are roughly 32,000 gun deaths per year in the United States. That’s a big number of deaths. There should be a law were every gun how has ever been checked out or bought to have a number and if stole they have to report about just in case someone is trying to use it for the something bad. For the better and the sake of our planet we should have better gun control considering it will save a lot of lives.
Not having gun control would have more criminals walking around with guns and in just a few seconds, able to pull the trigger and kill an innocent man, woman, kid, or an elder. Gun control is good idea, because there should even be anyone having a gun except for the police, and for emergency's only. Citizens should not have to worry because they dial 911 or 112 for an emergency situation. In America, gun violence have been on a rise after the Oregon Community College, but in Australia, they have strict gun control policy, because of that they have less suicides, less random crimes, and overall less violence. In an article, Douglas Weil said, “But bringing more guns into homes—where married couples occasionally fight, in which teens sometimes contemplate suicide, and in which the curiosity of young children often leads them to look through their parents' dresser drawers—will lead to more death” (Weil).
The general argument made by Shiha Dalmia in her work, “The Case Against Banning Guns” is that guns should not be banned in the United States. Banning guns is not going to stop people from killing other people. There is no possible way to collect every single gun in the U.S. and even if there was, people have other ways and items to hurt others. When something gets banned, everyone seems like they want to do that thing more. Guns should only be used for appropriate activities like hunting, for example, but there is no one to stop people from harming others.
The United States constitution states by the 2nd amendment, that all men have the right to bear firearms in order to protect themselves. The gun policy in the US has been widely discussed in broad manners, and after hearing so much from different media outlets, I believe that I am able to make a stand on where I lean towards on this complex subject I do not think fondly of the USA’s gun policy, it has never worked and the whole concept of allowing firearms in a society is a very bad idea. The gun policy fails in every way, and a major problem is that it can be abused by anyone. Without much hesitation, a person can purchase a firearm, which of course is very dangerous.
I think it is clear that America’s lenient Gun Laws have no doubt been a huge factor on the staggering amount of gun violence for a long time. I do believe, however, in people’s rights to defend and arm themselves, it is part of their constitution, I just feel that it is necessary that the laws regarding the 2nd amendment need to be reinforced and should introduce some restrictions to ensure that only the people who are mentally capable of wielding a firearm, without causing harm to society, should be allowed to acquire one. Guns should be banned in America, with 30,000 deaths yearly in America, we need to do something about it. Many counties have made strict gun control laws or just have banned guns and that seems to be helping them. We have the most gun deaths out of all wealthy countries, which is unacceptable and we need to change it as fast as possible to prevent further deaths. Pistols aren’t the only problem but automatic weapons are legal in only a few places and the United States is one of them.
