While regulations exist in the United States society to determine who needs food stamps and when those families need them, the abuse of this federal program still occurs. Assistance to needy families is crucial and normally temporary with the exceptions of those who use the program as a way of life. All 50 states have many different variations of regulations for food stamps. In Oklahoma, the federal program for assistance for food is called SNAP. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. It allows families on a low income to buy nutritious food with an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) card at authorized food stores that allow EBT (Oklahoma Department of Human Services). In Oklahoma, to be considered eligible for SNAP you must meet the following requirements. U.S Citizen Unemployed Adults 18 to 50 Meet income standards (As listed below) Social Security number for all members included Additionally, your household size and income must the following limits. Fraud is on the rise and this is how it happens. Those with food stamp cards use them for phony purchases. The cashier rings up the bogus purchases, and then provides cash equal to the purchase amount. (The Oklahoman Editorial Board) When the New York post conducted on open records review of 200 million EBT records from June 2011 to July 2012 it found welfare recipients use their cards to make cash purchases at Porn Shops, Strip Clubs, and Bars. In 2012, the Los Angeles times reported that debit cards with welfare funds were used to withdraw $4.3 million in casinos and $12,000 in strip clubs. For the average taxpayer, intent on working for a living and paying their taxes as required by law, withdraws of this type are truly
Welfare America, home of the brave, the free, and the blessed! In this country many programs have been established to help those in need. One of these programs is welfare. Welfare is a public assisting aid, which gives citizens who live in the minimal level of poverty free money. This program is funded from the taxes payed by all working Americans.
Over 35.4 percent of the United States is registered for welfare. An average family of four, that receives money from the government, can expect as least $500 in food stamps, and at least another $1,500 for whatever else, and top it all off, the government pays all bills and also for any medical visits for the family. So
In the essay it says “The people who run food banks report that most of their clients are minimum-wage workers who can't afford to eat on their salaries.” Sese most of the people do work they dont wanna seek help because of the stigma that comes with that. Some families are also denied food stamps, others don't know that they are able to get them. Although some people can get them like the essay said “The average length of a food stamp application is twelve often impenetrable pages; a permit to sell weapons is just two”. Why have something that everyone needs be harder to gain access of over guns which aren't needed.
Millions of single mothers live near or below the poverty line in the United States. They must struggle to simply pay the bills and put food on the table. Even with government subsidies, food stamps, and child support Katrina is fighting to survive with her children. The unfortunate part of the whole situation is that Katrina did nothing wrong she worked hard and simply tried to raise a family but life took a couple of turns. Katrina married young and started having children equally young as well.
The SNAP benefit cuts will make it harder for low-income individuals and families to put food on the table. For instance, if The Agriculture Act of 2014 cuts SNAP expenditures by $8.6 billion over the next years, “anti-hunger advocates said the bill would harm 850,000 American households, about 1.7 million people spread across 15 states, which would lose an average of $90 per month in benefits because of the cuts in the food stamp program” (Nixon, 2014). There have been cuts in the past to the SNAP program that has affected many participants. The cuts that have been realized in The Agriculture Act of 2014 in the SNAP program has related cuts that were caused due to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. When the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 ended it triggered quite a commotion for its termination of temporary increases in SNAP benefit levels that were included in the SNAP program.
Low income families should not be receiving EBT because there are people who are in worse situations than them who deserve the EBT but cannot receive them while they haves jobs which at least give them money to support their family. If people do receive EBT then they would be abusing the system and reforms need to be made and we intend to regulate the increase on the wealthy and the way it would be decided is by searching their background in government help and decided whether they need it or not and it will go on by then. Those that need EBT are not allowed to receive them while, those that do not need them get to have it and benefit from them as shown in the EBT graphs. There are families out there who continue to have children knowing they do not have enough money to support their family but rely on the government thinking they are willing to help them out. Although, these families would take full advantage of EBT and housing when all they should do is stop having more children until they can support themselves without having anyone assist them or government provided aid.
Currently, a portion of those granted with this government aid tend to abuse it by taking advantage of taxpayer’s money. Although many people believe that government aid should be given
I am not saying we should get rid of food stamps. We should require able-bodied people without any dependents to work for Food Stamps. When this happened in Maine and Kansas the number of spending and people jurassicly decreased. Food Stamps is just another system that people can use to get something for free by scamming the system. This reform in food stamps would 1: Lower the spending on Food Stamps.
We can tell from the DNA that is in their hair. The welfare system in America is broken, understanding what the welfare system is , should we drug test recipients, and should we background check recipients; however we may spend too much money and not get the result we want. The welfare system is a system to help the less fortunate people of the community. The poverty line depends on the size of the family when you are a single adult the poverty line is about $11,000 a year If you have 8
This statement says it all. No one wants to throw their money into something that isn’t going to help the cause. People think their money is going towards families that need the money for their children to go to college, pay the bills, or just help them feed the family. These are just a few reasons people are on welfare. On the other hand, not all people who go on welfare do drugs.
According to statisticsbrain.com, their are 110,489,000 Americans who are on welfare and more and more Americans are applying for welfare each year. Many Americans rely on welfare for their families and for individual needs. Welfare recipients should not be permitted to take a drug test because drug testing is expensive for states and the country, drug testing is unconstitutional and welfare recipients do not do drugs any more than people who do not receive welfare. Drug testing is expensive and cost states a lot of money one drug test cost averages to about 42 dollars, not including the cost for equipment and hiring people to conduct the test. States start programs that require welfare recipients to take a drug test and the programs end up costing them up to 1 million or, even more, depending on the number of welfare recipients that reside in that state.
Households below the poverty line was 6.7 % more likely to suffer from food insecurity as compared to those whose income is above the poverty line (Lombe et al,
Welfare is a government program that provides financial assistance to people wo cannot afford to care for themselves or their families. Welfare is separated into 13 different categories/programs, these include negative income tax, Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program (SNAP), Supplemental Security Income (SSI), Pell grants, Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), Child nutrition, Head start, Job training programs, Women Infants, and Children (WIC), Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), and Lifeline also known as Obama phone. Each of the listed welfare programs are tailored to different needs, and are funded by taxpayers. While welfare is meant to be nothing but beneficial, there are a few things that prevent the
One of those reasons being, drug testing welfare recipients could waste taxpayer’s money. The government would use tax money to administer drug test (Cunha, par. 3). Many taxpayers do not feel like they are obligated to pay for a person’s drug habit (“Editorial: Drug Testing Welfare Recipients Doesn’t Add Up,” par. 1). In Tennessee, only one person to the 800 who applied for government assistance tested positive for drugs. In Florida, during four months of drug testing , only 2.6 % of welfare recipients tested positive, which was under Florida’s illegal use of 8%, which meant that fewer people using government assistance used drugs.
Child Hunger in America Anna Quindlen, author of “School’s Out For Summer”, noticed there was a problem of child hunger in America. “If there was, we would know about it. We would read about it in the paper, we would see it on the news. And of course we would stop it. In America.”
