Imperialism has been forced in different places around the world for many centuries. As Cambridge Dictionaries states, imperialism is a “system in which a country rules other countries, sometimes having used force to get power over them”. Nowadays, Imperialism is still present in a disguised way; we even use it sometimes without us knowing that we do. We can notice while reading Derek Walcott’s biography, that he is a Saint Lucian poet. He has the perfect inspiration for the poem “The Sea is History”; his own home, his island.
“THE GENERATORS OF CITY DIVERSITY” BY JANE JACOBS Phạm Nguyên Thảo Student ID: 14510673775 Urban planning plays an important role in city life, especially in a dynamic economy and environment of the city nowadays. Because of the rise in number of crime, pollution, traffic jam,…, many cities are looking for new solutions to deal with these ever growing problems. In the past, many urban planners tried to create perfect cities to completely replace the old cities, for example Ebenezer Howard’s Garden City, or Le Corbusier’s Radiant City. Nevertheless, recent planning has switched from strict building codes and grand schemes, to a more community-based approach that focuses on improving community life and the environment in which people live in. Besides, developing cities also face the threat of losing their diversity and identities.
A tradition may continue and evolve for thousands of years—the word "tradition" itself is derived from the Latin tradere or traderer literally meaning to transmit, to hand over, to give for safekeeping. While it is commonly assumed that traditions have ancient history, many traditions have been invented on purpose, whether that be political or cultural, over short periods of time. Certain scholarly fields, such as anthropology and biology, have adapted the term "tradition," defining it more precisely than its conventional use in order to facilitate scholarly discourse. The concept of tradition, as the notion of holding on to a previous time, is also found in political and philosophical discourse.
A study of ethnic culture, which Yanagida suggested under the name of folklore, is to acquire the knowledge of a real life by clarifying it in history because the ethnic culture is a thing, which is handed down from the previous generations, even it is realities at the present time, thus, all cultures are formed historically. ‘About our ancestors: the Japanese family system,’ by Yanagida was written amid the atmosphere, which Japan was close to decisive defeat at the Pacific War, even while the air attack in the night continuing just then, though or because Yanagida seems to tell the story showing his ardor to the readers with great expectations that the people have clearer comprehension of the cultural tradition in Japan to find their hopes in
Odysseus Journey from Troy to Ithaca for example is the quest which depicts a central theme that serves as the basis for the story. The voyage involved obstacles such as the incident with the cyclops, the Phaeacians, storm caused by Poseidon, the wrecked ship and many more that could have held back a weak literary character. However, just like Saul from the storyteller, the perseverance of Odysseus signifies the importance of the quest, which is to get back home and save his palace from the Suitors. An example of the perseverance was Odysseus demand of Circe on Aeolian island to get them home. He said to her, “Circe, now make good a promise you gave me once—it’s time to help me home.” He said this despite the luxury life absent of agony he lived with her for a year, showing that his quest his the most important part of his life at that
Language There was a written Celtic language, but it developed well into Christian times, so for much of Celtic history they relied on oral transmission of culture, primarily through the efforts of bards and poets. These arts were tremendously important to the Celts, and much of what we know of their traditions comes to us today through the old tales and poems that were handed down for generations before eventually being written down. Druids Another area where oral traditions were important was in the training of Druids. There has been a lot of nonsense written about Druids, but they were a curious lot; a sort of super-class of priests, political advisors, teachers, healers, and arbitrators. They had their own universities, where traditional knowledge was passed on by rote.
Architecture carries a strong representation of our culture and tradition. It helps us to initiate a conversation with our past and let us dive inside our introspective. An experience and observation of the past that helps us to define Architecture in a very limpid way. My periodic tour during my academic life at many historic buildings and sites around our country predominantly helped me to acquire more insights about architecture and sustainability. An interest towards historic buildings indulged me to visit Japan several times where I came to see the recurrent confrontations encountered by the preservationists for rigorous restorations & revitalizations of the Buddhist temples.
