Smart People is a contemporary play by Lydia R. Diamond that is set in Harvard University. It is directed by Chuck Smith. The play circulates around the lives of four racially diverse characters: Brian White, a cynical Harvard professor specializing in neuropsychiatry; Jackson Moore, a hot-headed surgical intern at Harvard Medical school; Ginny Yang, a shopaholic Harvard psychology professor; and Valerie Johnston, a tenacious actress and part-time research assistant. Obviously, all of the characters are intellectuals who deal with racial issues and quarrelsome romantic relationships. The age of technology began in the late 1970s and has increased immensely to the present time. The technological advances have caused people to question the intellectual levels of younger generations. Some authors have stated in their works that all people under the age of 30 make up the dumbest generation. I feel some of the people in older generations believe in a tradition that all people should know general knowledge that is taught in schools. In my opinion we are not the dumbest generation because technological advances has encouraged the current generation to learn differently and more efficiently.
The AVID program has had a positive impact in my academics, and in my life by helping me focus, enrich, and solidify my goals. I can say with full confidence that AVID has become an integral part of my High School year that equipped me with the skills and knowledge needed to be successful in college. As an immigrant who came to the United States five years ago and English being my third language, the AVID program challenged me to think critically and strive to learn more. Personality wise, there are major changes that I observed once I joined the program.
Nelson Mandela once said, “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”. From a young age we have a strong desire to gain access to and pick up on new information. As we mature, different ideas are constantly being thrown at us, which forces us to reevaluate what we have been manufactured to believe. Although the idea is disheartening, we find that our innocence we have as children may have been used against us in a way that counterbalances all the concepts we were taught. From there on out we begin to acknowledge that there are other theories in the world that we were not considering before simply because we were not introduced to them.

In the play Into the Woods written by James Lapine and Stephen Sondheim, Little Red sings the song “I Know Things Now.” I chose the song “I Know Things Now” because I can relate to the lyrics. Most of the songs in Into the Woods have a theme to them and the song, “I Know Things Now,” definitely has a theme of maturity. Little Red does not listen to her mother when she does not stick to her path to her grandmother’s house. After she strays from the path, she ends up learning to listen to her mother more, and she also learns about many other important life lessons.
The documentary, “On the Way to School”, was filmed and released for public viewing in 2015. This documentary was filmed in four main locations: Kenya, Morocco, Argentina, and India. The person who produced the documentary was Pascal Plisson. Two groups that helped to film “On the Way to School” were UNESCO and the French NGO “Aide et Action”. The general purpose of the documentary were to inform the public the long, hardship-ridden journey that children in less wealthier countries must endure to receive an education.
As I am going to enter the university in Canada this coming September, I will explain reasons why I decide to study not in Japan but in Canada and what I would specifically like to learn there with my personal experience.
