The Story of Maci Kean When you think of people in a kid’s life, you probably imagine two parents, siblings, friends, and teachers. What you don’t typically think is a social worker, a judge, foster homes and a dead mother and father. This became the case for the then 15-year Maci Kean, as well as over 100,000 kids in the United States. When Maci was just a toddler, she became deaf due to a high fever and her father passed away when she was just two due to drug abuse. When she was around the age of 13 her mother passed away as well due to a drug overdose after getting out of jail.
Maya Angelou, born Marguerite Johnson, lived through an unstable early life. She was born in St. Louis, Arkansas, but moved away to Stamps, Arkansas at age three due to her parents’ divorce. There, Angelou lived with her brother, Bailey, and her paternal grandmother (Galenet - Self and a Song of Freedom in the Southern Tradition). As discussed in her first autobiography, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, seven-year old Maya was raped by her mother’s boyfriend. The man was consequently murdered by her uncles, and Maya, feeling responsible for his death, ceased talking and remained speechless for five years.
It was the eldest daughter, Fleur, about seventeen old then. She was so feverish that she’d thrown off her covers, and now she huddled against the cold wood range, staring and shaking.” Nanapush found Fleur without family, because her family died from the epidemic going around the town. This was such a traumatic experience for Fleur because she was sick. Usually when we are sick as children, we first look to our families for comfort and a method to make us feel better. The Lindbergh Case: Who Did It? ¨Latest figures show that 9.2 million children under- five are dying every year¨ (¨Child Mortality¨). The Lindbergh case involves a twenty month old baby who was kidnapped and murdered in the middle of the day while everyone was home. It all began when the maid left his room after he fell asleep. Although this happened in the twentieth century, they still have not truly figured out who the kidnapper was.

Timeline Project The first point on my timeline is of two gravestones. They’re Maggie Mae’s (the main character) parent’s gravestones, to be exact. They died when she was just three years old. This point happened fifteen years before the novel began. Due to her parents dying and having no other family members around, Maggie Mae was put in the foster system.

Line 40 “last winter my wife laid dying, starved in a filthy den; I have never been to a parish i came to a parish them. This statement shows that paupers lived in an unclean place with no food provided. Where is my wife you traitor the poor old wife you slew? Yes by God above me my nance was killed by you!” this statement demonstrates that the masters and the guardians would treat them horribly which caused many people in the workhouse to die. I came to the parish craving for bread, for a starving wife, bread for a woman who loved me through fifty years of life and what do you think they told me mocking me awful grief.
Just think of how hard it is for them with no one to help them or guide them to survive and live. About 80% of those homeless children (12-21) use drugs or alcohol. The use of these things leads to kids going down the wrong path in life. According to estimates by the Urban Institute, nearly 1 in 5 youth under the age of 18 will run away at least once. Over 50% of young people in shelters and on the streets report that their parents told them to leave or knew they were leaving and didn’t care.
