Introduction

In this essay, I will be answering the following question: how do statistics help us predict the results of an event such as the Billabong Pro Tahiti surfing competition?
I chose this question because I really like surf, therefore I think it is an interesting and fun topic to research on. Since I’ve been surfing for several years, I am informed on the sport and its difficulties, along with the process of competitions. I also think it is a good way to apply my mathematical knowledge to “real life” and statistics are fun to work with in general.

During this project, I have interviewed several people who are informed on the topic of surf and/or statistics to gather their thoughts on the importance of statistics. Statistics are important in sports because people want to know if they’re going to win as it is not worth the money if they don’t have a chance of winning. They allow us to predict what will happen in future events and can help those who make bets (bookmakers like PMU) establish the odds of the bet. More specifically, statistics are important in surf as they help predict the result according to the structure of waves.
