In this essay, I’ll be telling you my opinion on whether Andrew Carnegie was a hero or not. Andrew Carnegie, known as the king of steel, grew up poor, but became one of the richest and most successful business owner during the 1800s and 1900s. Much of the world regarded Carnegie as the most famous living American during his time. Andrew Carnegie was not a hero because he showed off his money, treated his workers poorly, and was selfish.
Andrew Carnegie was born in Dunfermline, Scotland on November 1835. Growing up poor, Carnegie started working 12 hour shifts at the age of 12 for a $1.20. As he started getting older he taught himself new things which would eventually lead him to making $1,500 a year at the age of 17. In the early 1870s Carnegie was so successful in the steel industry that he sold his Carnegie Steel Company to J.P. Morgan for $480 million making him the richest man in the world. Before dying Andrew Carnegie dedicated himself to helping charities and donating approximately $350 million to education. All of this makes Andrew Carnegie look like a hero, but he was not. Carnegie was no hero because he didn’t treat his workers fair enough, he was selfish, and he
Many people believe that Andrew Carnegie was a hero. I disagree, I believe that he was not a hero but a robber baron. Throughout every aspect of his life including his personal life, business approach, and his philanthropy show that he was not a hero. He has done many wrong and unjust things in these parts of his life they prove that he was not heroic. Not only is he not heroic but he is also a robber baron.
If you were the richest person in the world what would you accomplish with all the money you had? Andrew Carnegie, an American Captain of Industry By far off the greatest profitable businessman during his age, Carnegie left his mark on industry, and ordinarily greatly impacted the expansion of business enterprise in America. Essentially, Carnegie rose from poverty to become one of the most influential, industrial men in history by single-handedly building the American steel industry. Andrew Carnegie was famously known for being a hero because he would provide plenty to the poor. Andrew Carnegie was a hero in numerous ways one of the first reasons why Andrew Carnegie was a hero was because he helped create a better environment for the poor
Topic: Should Andrew Carnegie be described as a “captain of industry” or a “robber baron”?
During the late 19th century, there was a growth in industrialization. This brought new opportunities for the poor and the rich. For example, Carnegie helped build the steel industry in Pittsburgh Pennsylvania, which made him one of the richest man in the world. As Carnegie gained more wealth, he questioned who money should be given to. Carnegie was both a Robber Baron and a Captain of Industry.
First of all, he was a major pioneer in the steel industry and created one of the most successful steel companies of all time. Carnegie also played a lead role in recognizing the workers’ right to strike, as long as peaceful action is conducted. In addition to this, Carnegie disapproved of pools made by companies solely in order to raise prices and make more money. Second of all, Carnegie impacted the lives of so many with his work in philanthropy. He funded numerous libraries all across the U.S. and even in Europe, meriting him the title “Patron Saint of Libraries”.
Others, may think he could be seen as a hero because of the advances in technology that he encouraged. Not only that, but he could also be seen as a tragic hero. Though everyone has their own opinion, I personally believe that he is neither a monster or a hero. I could argue both sides and I have a very central
One example of why he is influential because of his heroic acts is because on the website http://www.businessinsider.com/10-items-not-invented-by-who-you-think-2011-8 it says, “Orville and Wilbur Wright were two brothers who fulfill a definition of a hero with their amazing accomplishment of inventing the first successful plane.” This quote shows me that people think he has heroic acts because it says they fulfill a definition of a hero. Another example why he is influential is because the same website says, ”Now treated as heroes, Wilbur and Orville Wright continued to set new records in distance and duration in front of amazed crowds.” This piece of evidence shows me that people around the world see him as a hero to the world because it says they were treated as heroes. Last piece of evidence is according to the same website it says, “A hero like Wilbur Wright is someone who follows their dreams.”
Is Andrew Jackson a hero or villain? I believe that Andrew Jackson is a Villain. The reasons I feel this way because he killed off THOUSANDS of Native Americans and pillaged their land. He abused his power.
Carnegie was not a hero, because a hero does a deed selflessly, but he thought a lot about himself. 184,400,000 dollars was spent on big-name corporations and associations that would honor him by naming a meaningful belonging after him (Doc C). Carnegie was a man who wanted to feed his ego but should have donated money to help the community, not make himself known. Andrew Carnegie was not a true hero. Many may say, going from rags to riches makes Carnegie a hero.
There are many ways Andrew Carnegie was a robber baron, yes. Yet, he always did things to help the community grow and helped people. In document 5 Carnegie shows a chart shows his foundation and the amount of money it donates to different things and people. In 2005 his foundation was giving out about $100,000,000 a year to education.
He even starved himself to show help people. He was a person who put people above him and never gave up on any cause he put his heart into. Never did he show weakness he was strong for the people he supported he was a hero. He didn't have to get better working conditions for those people he didn't have to keep living conditions equal after he made enough to survive he could have given himself so much more but he didn't he keep things equal.
Name of Industrialist: Andrew Carnegie (Steel Company) How did he acquire his wealth? Carnegie frequently recognized as one of the wealthiest person ever. He made big bucks from oil business. He also led the growth of the American steel company in the late 19th century.
They also may think he was a hero because of how he fought against his enemies with strength and power. Yet, in my opinion, even though he has done all those great things all the negatives speak louder than the
