Marching Band Character Analysis

I was born and raised in Gulfport, Mississippi, an area immersed in a relaxed coastal culture and a vibrant jazz and blues heritage. Gulfport is located right off the Gulf of Mexico and less than an hour from New Orleans, Louisiana. Living near the Gulf, heavily influenced my childhood, I would spend weekends at the beach, and long hours traveling to distant islands far from the coast I called home. The music you would hear at the beach were always from timeless Americana artist; such as, Bob Dylan and Jonny Cash. I have always had a burning passion for dance since I was a young girl. My first time on a stage, I was immediately hooked. The overpowering feeling of a crowd of people watching me as I do what I love, is a feeling I have always admired. Dance has developed my character and personality in many different ways. I have been taught responsibility, discipline, integrity and much more. I have learned how to lead with honor and become confident in front of a team. It is very odd because I have never been someone to want to speak in front of large crowds, but I could dance in front of millions of people and feel at home. My 15 years of experience has made me realize the love I have for dancing. It has grown into such a huge part of my life, so it is not shocking that I want to be a Kilgore Rangerette in college!

When I was in sixth grade I started playing the cello with very little experience, and with the development I have gone through the past three years has not just made me a better cello player. That experience gave work ethics, and the values of hard work skills to help me through life. Life is like a huge adventure, and it’s the journey that makes the destination worth it. Furthermore, as people move through life they go through a frustrating struggle of attempting to reach a goal, and that destination is nothing without the journey.

On November 1st, 2014 at 11:34pm the Summerville High School marching band was announced the SCBDA 5A State Champion for the first time in a decade. I believe this to be my greatest accomplishment, being a part of an organization that accomplished so much even though we were the underdogs of the rest of the competition. Our high school was not the most musically talented, nor are we the largest. However, the heart and soul we put into our performance was recognized by the judges.

“Adoption” is the first word in my family dictionary, a noun that defines my life and how I live. My parents adopted me when I was 13 months and taught me how my heritage defines my identity. Through heritage camps and adoption conferences, I came to accept my Chinese background as the dual part that defines my life in America.

Mediation is a form of alternative dispute resolution in which a neutral third party helps disputants resolve a conflict (Bishop, p. 64). The employee/supervisor mediation was my first experience role-playing as a mediator in a dispute. I enjoyed the experience and recognized how significant the role of a mediator was. There are many strategies/avenues a mediator can take when conducting a mediation and it is imperative that the mediator is able to adapt their mediation strategy in order to satisfy the party’s needs. This in-class role-play gave me the opportunity to apply all the knowledge that I learned during the course, to a real workplace scenario. I especially utilized Ewert’s five-stages of mediation, by preparing, introducing, framing the issues to the parties, determining the parties’ interests, and crafting solutions. Overall, I was extremely proud of the mediation and how passionate my disputants were.

There are a few achievements I am proud of, but what I am most proud of is my progress in school. I have always worked hard and tried to get my best grade. I have done pretty well in school and am trying to prepare for college. I try to develop better study habits and work efficiently. After I moved and my parents split, I began to adjust to whole new life. Even with all the distractions in life I try to keep my mind clear and focus on my long term goals.
