Why I Want To Dance Essay

Growing up in a lower-middle class home, I have learned to be modest and frugal. I have also learned that nothing comes free and that everything must be earned through determination and hard work. So when I joined the Cub Scouts at age 7, I was determined to excel and achieve the highest rank in scouting, Eagle Scout. Since then, I have been intent on changing things for the better in everything I participated in. Ergo, having a lifetime goal to give back to the Earth, whether it be directly by studying chemistry to help the Earth or indirectly by donating some of my time and money back into the science field to help fund future developments of technology, seems best for the world. Knowing that nothing is guaranteed, my participation in the Boy Scouts has served as a foundation to allow me to expand my knowledge in other fields of study in case my expected career path does not go as planned.

Thank you for the great honor of being invited to apply for membership to such a well-respected and incredible organization. I am very excited about this opportunity as it presents an optimal way in which to further my passion of expanding my mind and bettering my community. Since I entered high school, I have pursued this by taking all honors classes and any Advanced Placement classes offered to me each year. Although the title “band nerd” doesn’t sound as impressive as being a star athlete, I wear my uniform with pride. Playing trombone in the marching band has earned the top spot on my list of favorite high school activities. Being a member of the Ardmore High School Marching Band has been both a positive and challenging experience. When I was selected to serve as band president for the 2015 marching band, I was both honored and excited for the upcoming season.

Jane Goodall once said, “What you do makes a difference, and you have to decide what kind of difference you want to make.” For being a member in the National Honor Society, you are required to make choices involving the four pillars representing the activity itself; scholarship, service, leadership, and even character. Like Goodall says, you have the power to make anything happen, but it is your gift to be able to choose what you will produce. Well, it was something I always wanted to do from the time I was a child. But when I was in grade twelve deciding whether I was going to go to the university for drama, then 9/11 happened. That made me kinda put the brakes on. I wanted to do something that could affect people more--something that was more helpful. So instead of applying to drama school, I went to be a police officer instead. I did the training for two years, then the program, and I did about two hundred hours of ridealongs, and that's when I realized I wore my heart on my sleeve a little bit too much to be an officer, and so I decided to go to law school instead. I am Cadet Captain Mejia and I have been in JROTC my whole high school career (4 years). It has been a crazy 4 years, from being cadet of the month my freshmen year to being color guard commander my senior year. JROTC has been a roller coaster for me, I loved JROTC my freshmen year. I did everything my first year in JROTC, I was in color guard, drill team, unarmed drill team, and raiders team! I did almost all color guard performances.

My life has been full of many opportunities to participate in things that I love and these opportunities have taught me fabulous lessons. Through my persistent hard work in the Clark high school marching band I have been very fortunate to learn important lessons about positivity, service and respect.

I have been considering and trying to aim for National Junior Honor Society since I have entered this school. This would be a wonderful experience if I could become a member of the National Junior Honor Society Chapter. Although, I am not involved in a numerous about of clubs or extracurricular activities in school. I am in a couple of organizations, do community work and work related jobs outside of school that demonstrates my skills, such as leadership and providing me experience. I like to make my community a place where people can get along and that it is comfortable for at least most people since not everyone will be like that. I like to be involved in various clubs, activity, etc. It gets me moving up and about on my feet. Also, I can time manage all the clubs that I am in, the activities outside of school, the school itself carefully and very efficient. I believe I should be a member of the National Junior Honor Society Chapter team for various reasons, such as I can demonstrate leadership, have work experience, a "people person" and my involvement for F. Niel Postlethwait Middle School and more.

Joining the school marching band at the beginning of my freshman year of high school was one of the best decisions I have ever made. I’ve spent hundreds of hours working with my peers, building friendships while working toilsomely to perfect one show each year. When we weren’t on the field practicing, we were performing at football games or at community events, bringing the community together with a sense of pride. Easy to encounter, not so easy to overcome, failures claw at hopes and successes. They bring down those who are weak enough to let them in. They strengthen those that can get past them. I got past one that almost ruined my chances for new opportunities.

Through the experience of working as youth leader for freshman connection I have grown as a better leader. To help incoming freshman was incredible experience for me. I joined freshman connection to serve school and defiantly to get knowledge and team building skills out of it, so that it can help me make my college experience better. I think I have achieved all the goals that I wanted to through working as youth leader. Additionally, not only that but also to work on community service project on bullying has really allowed me to serve as teacher helper. I have had a fantastic sorority experience. I went through recruitment and joined a sorority with a completely open mind because I am the first in my family to participate in greek life, so I really didn’t know what all to expect. I am confident when I saw say, joining a sorority was the best decision of my life. I have had the opportunity to make amazing friends in and out of my sorority, meet impressive alumni at our international conference, and learn about and actively advocate for our wonderful philanthropy. On November 1st, 2014 at 11:34pm the Summerville High School marching band was announced the SCBDA 5A State Champion for the first time in a decade. I believe this to be my greatest accomplishment, being a part of an organization that accomplished so much even though we were the underdogs of the rest of the competition. Our high school was not the most musically talented, nor are we the largest. However, the heart and soul we put into our performance was recognized by the judges.

I have always wanted to take a dance class. Growing up, music was the only thing I was involved in. I was in show choir for two years, but that was the extent of my dance experience. One aspect that intrigued me about USC is their ballroom dance program. In my small hometown, this is not an opportunity I currently have. I believe dance is one of the best ways to showcase your self-expression and creative expression. It never ceases to amaze me how performing or watching a performance can make time and the outside world disappear. In my free time at USC, I would love to take ballroom classes as another outlet for creative expression. I dance almost everyday and I’m thankful to have the most amazing teachers. I’m lucky to be able to do what I love and have a supportive set of friends and family behind it all. I’ve been exposed to many different genres and have met so many breathtaking artists. Dancing allows me to express myself in a confident way and I feel good about what I’m doing while I’m dancing. I get to travel to different places and meet new people from all over the world. Dance provides me with never-ending discovery and I’m thankful for that.
