Observation
Observation was another method used to gather data. The second research question: “To identify factors contributing to issues of information security in internet cafes”. In observation, the researcher observes or watches the phenomenon being studied (Corbetta, 2003). It should be noted that involves taking things into consideration by attempting to understand them in depth so to collect information about them.
Types of observation by Kawulich (2005):
• Simple observation – this is an observation in which the researcher attempts to watch things as they are, without any form of manipulate or intervention in the situation. In other internet cafes, the researcher was also a customer in order to verify some of the findings in the questionnaires. The researcher paid R10.00 for one hour internet access just like any regular customer. According to Hussey and Hussey (1997), data can be presented in the form of charts, tables, and diagrams and thus enables the researcher to distinguish relationships and patterns which are not evident in the raw data.
Frequency distribution graphs and table was used for the purpose of this research to reflect the data collected from users or participants in different criteria. Data was analysed using the MS Excel spreadsheet. For an example, in this question: “Have you ever been affected by issues of information security in Internet Cafes”?. A calculation could be made in terms of how many participants said “yes” and “No”, and this was converted into a percentage. In terms of comparing results, a chart was used.
After the data was captured on the spreadsheet and chart created, the researcher printed the screen to created screen shorts, copy and pasted them into MS Word document. Clustered cylinder columns and pie charts were used to analyse data.
