I spent my fifteen hours observing two special education classrooms at Sulphur Intermediate School. One focused on math and the other on reading, though many of the children I observed worked in both classrooms. The students were in the third, fourth, and fifth grades. Most of the students had mild to moderate disabilities and simply needed extra help in reading, math, or both subjects. They did not stay for the entire day, but rather came for certain periods. During this time, they primarily worked on worksheets designed for the special education classroom as well as working on achieving their goals for accelerated reading. There were a few students who came in for an hour with work from their general education classroom and needed extra help completing their work. There were two students who had more severe disabilities, but they worked with paraprofessionals and did not do the same work as the rest of the class. Now, I realize that a student needing special education does not automatically mean that they will need help with everything and have an extremely difficult time learning. Most of the students I observed did not seem any different than the students not in special education. They just needed extra help in certain subjects. They picked up on the material much more quickly than I had thought they would and were able to do more on their own than I had originally thought. Before this class and project, I also did not think about the fact that students with special needs often stay in the general education classroom as well as working in the special education

In the short story “I Just Wanna Be Average”, Mike Rose talks about the boundaries between the “average” and special education students. He first talks about how the teachers don’t strive to push their students to engage in education. He describes one teacher saying, “He had little training in English, so his lesson plan of the day work had us reading the district’s required text, Julius Caesar, aloud for the semester.” (315) Another great example where he saw the dissimilarity between classes is when he was put at a regular classroom. Rose was struggling to keep up with everyone because he got used to the leniency before.

The first observation was conducted on August 30th at 9:00 a.m., while the student was participating in the special education resource room. The observation took place for a total of 25 minutes. For the duration of the observation the student was seated at a small table working one-on-one with the special education teacher. Along with the student being observed and the special education teacher, two other students, as well as, two paraprofessionals were in the special education resource room during the observation time. One student and paraprofessional were working one-on-one at a small table, while the other student was sitting in a bean bag chair reading a book.
In the program, there are students with learning disabilities, students with autism, nonverbal students, students with behaviors, and much more. There are students right here at CHS that have these disabilities and most students here do not understand how to interact with them. Also for those of you who are future parents, you never know what the future holds and you could have a child with disabilities. Schools need to provide students with resources such as an RA or SNA (Special Needs Assistant) to students or teachers that want or need one. They also need to provide specific framework for students such as IEPs etc., allow pre-entry contact for pupils and parents, and create a strong relationship with parents based on constant communication. As I am entering my new role as the ELA and ELL teacher in a middle school, I finding that these laws and new legislations are shedding some light on questions that I have felt left unanswered by many that I have spoken to about my new position. I now understand my purpose and feeling as though I am now becoming the advocate for students entering my school. Participant observation is a research technique where an investigator eases his way into an area or a social group and observe peoples behavior and actions for a better understanding of the internal structure of society. It is considered an effective model for data collection because of its natural state. Since Participants have no idea there is someone watching them, they behave as they normally do which means the evidence is valid. Another way it shows its effectiveness, is the fact that it digs deep into social interaction which gives the researcher the opportunity to become open to new insights. Conclusion After spending some time in both the general and special educational classrooms, I found there were similarities and differences between the two for example special needs students received more personalised care than their counterparts in both classrooms. A difference was that the special educational classroom was perhaps more effective at the students developing to their full potential whereas the general classroom would teach them better social and communication skills. In short, they are both great environments for the students to be in despite the differences.
The educational system offers a variety of programs for the general population. One of these programs is designed to meet the needs of children who cannot profit much from general or regular education because of certain disabilities. This is the Special Education (SPED) program. Special Education is purposeful intervention designed to present eliminate and overcome the obstacles that might keep an individual with disabilities from learning and from full and active participation in school and society. The ultimate goal of SPED is mainstreaming students into regular school.
Thus, they will achieve higher grades. Moreover, they will be greatly engaged in the society as they are building bridges with their peers from several backgrounds. On the long run, teachers, parents, and the society as a whole would develop. Students with learning disabilities should be included in the “normal” classroom because it improves their academic performance, social behavior, and communication language. One reason why students with learning disabilities should be in the normal classroom is that inclusion improves their academic performance.
A way to decrease this tendency is through relating and creating lessons that interest students. Sadly, in schools, children with severe academic, behavioral, and social problems are disregarded, often seen as the problem child. These children are passed along each grade to teachers who do not address their problems. As a student in the special education program, I saw my, peers who endured constant failure begin to resent school. They viewed school as a waste and dropped out once they turned 16.
Method Setting I conducted my observations in two upper division courses at a California University. These two classes were held in different classrooms, class A was held in a lecture hall and class B was held in a classroom. Observations started 10 minutes before the lecture and the interviews were held at random with two members, one from each class. The observations of class A took place in Social Science Lab 100 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00-6:20pm and for class B, it took place in Social Science Lab 248 on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 3:30-4:50 pm. It was the day that I’ve been waiting for over 3 years. A day that would finally let me be normal like everyone else and have the choices as other people without being ridiculed by the teachers that saw me as unqualified to be taught in a standard way. Thanks to my mom thinking that it would be a marvelous idea to have me be placed in special education due to my lack of effort taking reading comprehension test. I was placed in special education at the end of 5th grade, and sought to see the end of it. That day would eventually come on early April of 2015, where I was called upon to the office during class in 8th grade.
