My first battle of the war, which is now known as the Battle of Saint-Mihiel, began on September 12, 1918, and lasted until the 15th of September. Saint Mihiel is located in France on the western front. Our forces, combined with the French troops, managed to defeat the Germans in this battle. I was under the command of General John J. Pershing of the First Army. We had attacked the Germans while they were retreating and had managed to easily secure the victory. This was the first and only offensive attack that we were involved in during the war. The battle was a fairly simple victory for us because we had the upper hand on the offensive side.
