Persuasive Asylum Speech

1. What can we do to fix foster care and what can we do to make foster care easier in the world? What can we teach children that are in the foster care system before they age out?

6 years ago my cousin, Payton, came to stay with us. At the time we didn 't think anything would be permanent. Now, six long years later, I couldn 't imagine what my life would be like without my brother.

An asylum seeker is a person who is seeking protection as a refugee and is still waiting to have his/her claim assessed. The Refugee Convention definition is used by the Australian Government to determine whether our country has protection obligations towards asylum seekers.

We are told that Australia is the “blessed country”. A country where our most appealing asset is our multicultural community and diverse society. In our anthem, we sing: “for those who come across the seas, we’ve boundless plains to share”. Ironically, this line is in the second verse, which most people barely ever sing. Perhaps this reveals the true attitude Australia has towards asylum seekers. People who flee from countries which are oppressing them, escaping for their lives. Australia’s inhumane treatment of asylum seekers and the mandatory detention policy means that asylum seekers are locked in a detention centre until they are processed, which can take years.

In Australia, refugees and asylum seekers are treated like the enemy in a war: the target of a highly resourced, military-led “deterrence” strategy complete with arbitrary detainment, detention camps, guards to terrorise them, forced deportations and the violent suppression of those who protest. Australia is failing to meet the standards required when regarding the treatment of asylum seekers. It is fact that asylum seekers make up less than 3% of Australia’s annual immigration yet the idea is being distorted to that of which they will overpopulate a country that prides itself on being a multicultural society. I want to shed light on the misconception that asylum seekers are not ‘legal’ when in actual fact it is a human right to seek freedom.

Imagine if you were born into a country filled with poverty, fear, anxiety, despair and sorrow. The pain and suffering you would go through every day was so violent that you and your family had given up on all measures of hope. Every day you would fear persecution and you couldn’t even feel safe in the comfort of your own home. But what if there was a sliver of hope of escaping this drama occurring in your homeland by leaving by boat. All this drama gone in a flash, wouldn’t you want to try? putting your life at risk, but anyways what is the point of staying back, where you are just suffering emotionally, psychologically and physically as the day passes. 51 million people worldwide and 800,000 people in Australia have experienced these feelings

Asylum seekers. The Oxford dictionary defines this as someone who has left their home as a political refugee to seek refuge somewhere else. These people have gone through hardships we cannot fathom. drought and famine may be just a few of the things they have experienced. Firstly, under the United Nations refugee convention, asylum seekers are allowed to exercise their right and as Australia is a signatory of this convention they are allowed to seeK asylum in our country. but think of the amount of time, effort and money would be needed to complete this task. How would you feel if you and your family were denied the opportunity to a better life or had to wait years for one? The immigrants goal is to strive for a better future for themselves and their family. Coming here will help them achieve that goal. You may be thinking why cant they have a good future where they live? In some cases, the country they live in could be poor, not have many schools, is not safe, etc. America has more technology, schools, medicine, job opportunities, etc. Some may say how this may lead to letting in terrorists or how they will be taking away our jobs. That is a reasonable answer although, the United States itself was built and enhanced by immigrants who fled their country to find a better life for themselves, their families, and future generations. We as American citizen should allow these immigrants to become one of us. What if it were you? Wouldn’t you want to help these immigrants? Thesis: It is very important for the sake of Americans tax dollars that we change the way that prisons are run and increase the productivity of inmates so when they are released from jail they are ready to be a productive member in society and have the confidence to achieve new goals.

Currently, there is an issue facing the nation of epic proportions. Illegal immigrants are invading our land, stealing our jobs, and wasting our tax money by way of government assistance. Their numbers are growing exponentially, and they no doubt wish to take over the country. There is a solution that is beneficial to us all. Initially you may be appalled by my proposal. Hear me out and listen to my logic, and you will undoubtedly support my position. The resolution is within reach. Albeit ghastly at first thought, enslavement is the answer.

America is one the greatest experiments in freedom and liberty history has ever known. We are a nation that was built on the minds and ideals of immigrants. Our Founding Fathers created America so that everyone could have a chance at "life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness". Those are aspects of my country, I would never change because they are what make us unique. The glow of America casts a ripple of hope upon those who struggle. Those who live among poverty and violence look to America and see a wonderful country filled with opportunity. However, in recent months, America has become a laughingstock, a joke. Donald Trump, as well as many conservative Republicans would like to would like to build a wall separating America from Mexico, limit a woman’s choices, and deny current citizens basic psychological and physical assistance. We should work towards building human connections, not walls. Our future president will have the power to implement an immigration policy and make decisions that will effect the immigrants who currently reside within our borders. As a woman, I believe that my rights should not be determined by some man in Washington DC. Instead, everyone should be entitled to their own opinion. Abortions and contraceptives are not procedures or medications that women usually advertise and frankly, it is none of government’s business what women choose to do with their own bodies. New York Senator Robert F. Kennedy said, “Our attitude towards immigration reflects our faith in the American ideal. We have always believed it possible for men and women who start at the bottom to rise as far as the talent and energy allow. Neither race nor place of birth should affect their chances.”(Robert F. Kennedy). Kennedy expresses how the United States thrives on new beginnings. For example, when the Irish traveled to America, they were in pursuit of a fresh start after the 1840s potato famine. But since Trump’s election, and even the period during his campaign, it seems like American ideals have changed.

Those who don’t know better come into the library looking around and see where they should sit feeling scared that someone would say you can’t sit there. They think that were jump them were going to steal from them. They think we're in gangs if you have a tattoo. They think we will hurt them because all Mexicans are undocumented. But we aren’t My parents we born in the United States and I was born here, yes my grandparents were immigrants but they came here for a better life. But we don’t care what people think of us. We know that we aren’t what people think of the use, and we aren’t rapist we aren’t poor. We aren’t landscapers we aren’t what people think. And all around they can think whatever they want to think but we know what we are. But

The sources cited suggest that due to the large number of refugees and asylum seekers, governments of developed countries have implemented policies to deter people from seeking asylum such as immigration detention policies, strict visa restrictions, rigorous border checks and the stopping of voyages of vessels suspected of carrying smuggled asylum seekers (Silove et al. 2000). Hunger, insecurity, death in the Mediterranean, exploitation, impossible life conditions. All of these terms are describing the current events taking place in front of EU’s doorstep, where the refugees have fled to after the chaos in foreign countries. The second chaos on their path for a better life.
