Homework has been a part of Americans’ learning for so long, that the idea of not having to complete it may seem incredible, surreal, or even impossible. The survey of 1,000 K-12 teachers found that middle school teachers assign about 3.2 hours of homework each week. On a normal day, students have five core classes, and when you multiply that by 3.2, you have 16 hours of homework for middle school students. Although most educators believe that homework is beneficial, teachers should stop assigning it because kids need time to be kids, they need more rest, and students need a brain break. It is true that most people think that kids have plenty of free time; however, this is not entirely the case, as homework takes time away from other leisure activities or house chores. According to Heather Shoemaker, author of Why Parents Should Not Make Kids Do Homework, “Children rebel against homework because they have other things they need to do. Holler and run. Do family chores. Go to bed early.” This shows that students need this time to do other activities such as sports, hanging out with friends, and being with family, and not worry about their homework grade. Therefore, because students spend a maximum of eight hours at school, they should be expected to spend their free time doing homework. In the article titled Why Parents Should Not Make Kids do Homework, the author says, “young students can rarely cope with complex time management skills or the strong emotions that
