Verbal communication refers to the form of communication in which message is transmitted verbally; communication is done by word of mouth or a piece of writing. Objective of every communication is to have people understand what we are trying to express.
Verbal communication is further divided into:
1. Oral Communication
2. Written Communication

ORAL COMMUNICATION
Oral communication means spoken communication or communication through speech. It includes face-to-face conversations, telephonic conversation, video, radio, television etc.

WRITTEN COMMUNICATION
A written communication may be published or hand written. In written communication, message can be transmitted via email, letter, report, memo etc.

Appearance is often a disregarded part of communication. The audience may judge the person on their appearance and not really listen to what is being said. It is based on your appearance that before you have time to open your mouth and give an account of yourself, certain assumptions, both consciously and subconsciously, have been formed.

Clothing conveys nonverbal clues about a speaker’s personality, background, level of confidence, mood etc. Messed up hair and wrinkled clothes sends the message “I don’t care”, while appropriate attire shows the importance of the event. Dress codes have built-in rules about the message sent by what a person wears and how they carry themselves in it. Well-dressed and well-groomed speakers can inspire confidence in their abilities.

As a general rule, the attire should be chosen as per the type of audience, the event and the purpose. Dress should be comfortable and not overdressed. Also, making a fashion statement by a public speaker is not advisable as it can detach from the substance of the speech. Different societies and cultures have different dressing norms. Little can be done to alter the speaker’s face but a lot can be done about the expression that is on it. It is the speaker’s duty- to himself and the organisation, that he represents- a calm, friendly and professional exterior- irrespective of the way he’s feeling inside. The speaker must try to smile and appear optimistic. Making eye contact is very important as it helps to connect with the audience.

Understanding body language is one of the most important aspects of verbal communication. If you are speaking to an audience in person, the audience will react to your posture.
