Pros and Cons: Raising Minimum Age to Purchase Tobacco Products
Background:
In the 2018 session of the Indiana General Assembly, Representative Charlie Brown introduced House Bill 1380 which would have made Indiana the sixth state to raise the minimum age to buy tobacco products and electronic cigarettes from 18 to 21. The Indiana House passed the bill out of committee, but the house leadership decided to study the issue next summer before voting. The pros and cons of House Bill 1380 are listed below.
Pros
• Raising the minimum age to buy tobacco products would save lives. Tobacco products are the number one cause of preventable illness and deaths in the United States (Carr, 2016). In addition, nearly 9 out of 10 people who currently smoke started their habit before age 18. Currently 151,000 Hoosier children under the age of 18 will die younger because they participate in smoking cigarettes (Indiana Tobacco Prevention and Cessation Commission, 2017). Increasing the age to buy tobacco products to age 21 would stop many people from starting to smoke tobacco products as a result of the legal barrier, and in turn would save the lives of many future adults (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 2017).
• If the age to buy cigarettes and other tobacco products were raised, businesses would be able to recoup lost revenues in productivity and health care costs. Employers across Indiana lose a total of $3.2 billion a year in lost productivity (Indiana Tobacco Quitline,
As a result of all of these restrictions, it makes it a little harder for people to start smoking. This contribution is still very relevant today. Regardless of the drop in numbers, tobacco companies are
In California alone, the number count of deaths from smoking has been increasing every single day and has not been going down at all. In reading a article I read that a Surgeon General stated that “ Approximately half of today’s 44.8 million smokers will die prematurely from smoking-related diseases.” Prop 56 will help California put the death toll lower than it is right now. The way Prop 56 will help save many lives is by adding a $2.00 increase in the tax revenue for a cigarette or anything that contain the ingredient of nicotine. When reading a map in Tobaccofreekids.com I saw that California was the 37th out of the 50 states that had the lowest taxes on cigarettes.
An overall goal of Healthy People is to enhance the health of all population, predicted reduction for lung cancer from 2007 to 2020 is 10% (Cuyahoga County Board of Health, 2016). According to Center for Disease and Prevention (CDC) (2016), the Healthy People 2020 focuses on three main points when it comes to tobacco use. The first main area that Healthy People 2020 is focusing on when it comes to tobacco use is implementing policies to decrease the tobacco use, especially in younger generations (CDC, 2016). The second area of focus is on health system changes by increasing accessibility, affordability to smoking cessation treatments and resources (CDC, 2016). The third focus is on implementing policies to make tobacco less affordable, to limit publicizing, and to inhibit sales to underage population (CDC,
Most people who smoke say they started young, so putting an age restriction, having a more smoke-free environment, and raising taxes on cigarettes will prevent young people from being able to get their hands on tobacco products or wanting to. With less tobacco use in the world, more people will be healthier and life expectancy will rise, not only because they will not be putting dangerous chemicals in their bodies, but the pollution caused by cigarettes will decrease. It would be nice to see less littered cities and states and have more clean air to breathe. Overall, the country and the world will be happier and healthier. This will improve the lives of the people, though not everyone will always comply, but according to data in previous paragraphs if we try and make an effort tobacco can eventually become a thing of the
(Glaser par. 6). I believe that educating people on alcohol is one of the most fundamentally solid ways of being more safe around alcohol, lowering the age will give more people this opportunity. While some may not have a responsible guardian to turn to the many that do will result positively in the number of fatalities due to
Boom!!! Smoking age being changed to 21? The legal age to be considered an adult is 18, and most states follow that and let them by tobacco products. Tobacco products are harmful to the body, and people that smoke know this and will not stop smoking. Fake ids are even still being created for the use of underage buying.
However, some people say that the legal age should be lowered, because it diminishes the thrill of breaking the law to get a drink. This argument falls apart when one considers that more 18 year olds will be exposed to doing dangerous
Everybody has their own opinion on the smoking ban and a lot times the view points about the tobacco industry and how tobacco as a whole effects health insurance get passed up. This smoking ban controversial concern is not black and white. There are so many surrounding stakeholders and viewpoints that come into concern between non-smokers and smokers, the tobacco companies and health insurance companies. This topic affects society as a whole concerning money, health, environmental factors for example what second hand smoke does to the air that affects your lungs, and the government. My audience is intended for those who are affected by the smoking ban; the smokers, the non-smokers, public places, business, tobacco companies as well as health
The cost of their health care will automatically decrease, and this will improve their general standards of living. As such, the Obama Administration on tobacco control engineered by the American first lady. The administration has the mandate to ensure that the next generation will be tobacco free through the children health insurance program and reauthorization act (Liverman, 89). The federal also imposes an increment of the tax levied to every packet of cigarette in order to prevent smoking and reduces the tendencies of its
Increasing the minimum age of tobacco products will lead to reductions in both smoking prevalence and cigarette consumption among smokers, especially among adolescents and young adults. Access will be decreased to minors and 18-20 year olds who already smoke have to be forced to quit. In all likelihood, the majority of this population would attempt to purchase tobacco products illegally through retailer or black market channel (SB-151 Tobacco Products, n.d.).
Three of the most important reasons lowering the drinking age would be wrong and there would be more car accidents, it ruins the teens' or minors' bodies, and teens and minors do not understand the consequences and they affect their future. While many people have their own opinion about lowering the drinking age, the facts are there. The facts show that 18 year olds are not responsible enough not are their bodies ready to consume alcohol legally. Concerned parents need to know what is right and wrong for their children and not let this law pass in their
A daily basis of only adults smoking could change and evolve into the whole population, from all ages, getting into that unhealthy habit. It’s undeniable that some things placed by the government are actually helpful, especially the age limits. They often state that being able to express themselves in any way possible should be considered. This could cause an uproar within the world population. If teens are getting what they want, then so should everyone, by all means lets legalise drugs and weapons and we’ll see what a great time everyone is having when families, schools and governments are effected as well as countries.
Smoking cigarettes doesn’t only have an effect on the one who smokes however additionally the people around them. I feel that smoking should not be legalized in the United States, even if this is an unacceptable issue to the majority of people in the country. There are smoking bans that were enforced in early years to insure the protection of the people in businesses, and eating place
Arguments in favor of the ban on tobacco advertising in India There are many people that think that smokers should be capable of deciding by themselves what was good or bad for their health and that, therefore it had to play the role of a responsible mother. Amit Sarkar, Editor, Tobacco News said that “Adults who consume tobacco do so of their own free choice. The risk falls entirely on them and is fully explained to them. If we lose sight of this principle, then we lose sight of the truth on which all the free societies depend, namely that freedom and risks are inextricable, and whomsoever assumes the right to save us from risks, is also assuming right to limit our freedom".
In fact, those who smoke have their life span shortened by about approximately. However, the government must ban tobacco smoking in order to prevent smokers from lethal diseases, protect nonsmokers as well as saving the environment. The most obvious reason as to why tobacco should be
